Finally got the splitter and got around to splitting a bunch of rounds I had. I also got out of the way moving about a face cord of some dry cherry, maple, and sassafras mix to the porch outfront for this winter. I know its a bit early but needed to free up some racks to reorganize out back. Still got more splitting to do but bulk of what I have on hand is done.

Found a mouse nest in one of the stacks, poor thing didn't know what hit her. She took off into another close by rack and left about 4-5 babies. I grabbed the just the nest and put it on a nice piece of discarded bark & shimmied the babies off onto the nest and placed it under the rack where the mother went and covered with another piece of bark. I kept working and they were crying and crying, not long after before I went in I checked it and all of them were gone. Was awesome to know she came back for them!!

looking good sir! Ran into a mouse last month in a wood pile. No nest or babies.
Years back, one of my cats used to hang out with me when i worked on wood. He took care of any mice id find. Great hunter.

Well I hate mice in the stacks. Had an infestation of them a few years back and it’s a nasty smelly mess.
That being said I don’t think I’d have the heart to kill a nest of babies.
Noticed a nice black snake in the piles this year. Hopefully he’s well fed. It’ll be interesting to see what’s hiding in the wood this year.

Thanks! I think our house cat is taking care of anything getting into the basement. We find a few weird looking piles of different color fur from time to time. We have a stray cat (or someone lets it out) always wondering around that I am sure helps reduce the population.

Same here, I just couldn't do it I don't have the heart. I am shocked I haven't had any snakes in the stacks or have really ever seen one around on my property. I did see one not far away killed in the road last year, was decent size!

Thinking about it there must be some mice in the wood or that snake wouldn’t have been hanging around :)
Usually find skins of garter snakes. First time I remember a black snake. Bigger snake, bigger appetite. Bon apetite.

Thought of that and it's always a possibility but I was working next to that stack the entire time and I had my eye on it. But who knows....!

i couldve sent "Taters" over. He'd probably like free range mice! Used to be outdoor cat, but turned into a 19lb flabby tabby indoor cat. Likes to watch chipmunks and night time critters by the slider. He'll sneak out on occasion and doesnt go far. One time last year he snuck out without us realizing it. Shows up with a chipmunk in his mouth! IMG_0378.JPG

Maybe I don't have a heart. I find mice and even babies, they are gone. I have no need for them and don't have any cats around either. Just yesterday my wife set some traps in 2 barns and made me happy when she caught some this morning. Guess she doesn't have a heart either. Neither of us like them.

Found this one in a stack on Saturday. Looks like he recently ate a critter judging by the bulge in his middle!

I agree Dennis! Mice are too destructive, I have those solid bait squares between my stacks and sticky traps all over the home/garage.

Dont get me wrong, I draw the line with any animal when it starts messing with my property. Got 3 chipmunks last summer in rat traps. Those pests were in my bbq, gutters, siding, etc.....they are gone. Had a mouse under the smoker, he got flattened with a rake. If they stay out in the woods where they belong, we can peacefully co exist.

I agree. I have chipmunks messing with the flower pots/dirt. GF is POed about it. They are cute to watch stuffing their jowls with sunflower seeds (an inspiration for a wood hoarder for sure) at the birdfeeder, but im ready to get rid of them.
