The salmon are raised at the hatchery until smoky then released into the ocean. The commercial fleet then get days to catch some of the run coming back to the hatchery. The money is split between the boat the catches and the hatchery. For the weekend we got 19 halibut, 7 flounder, 4 yellow eye rock fish, 1 quillback rockfish and 6 pacific cod and 3 pounds of spot prawns.
We were using 2 pound weights to get the bait to the bottom. Down riggers stay on the boat, if the salmon looked better on sonar, we would have rigged those rods and trolled. For bottom fish we both anchored and drifted. Drifting was way more successful this weekend.
