This weekend's work (well... Thursday through today). Just shy of a cord of Willow cut, split, and stacked. Yea, willow is not great but it was free - the neighbor trimmed his Willlow farm and said I could take whatever I wanted. I also made a new row-top-cover (just visible on the right side stack) out of left over metal roofing. I stiffened it up by bolting it to three lengths of 2x6 (each end and middle). It's resting on top of the row and snugged down using lengths of old bicycle tire inner tubes, pulled down and attached to splits. We'll see how well that works. Gpsfool
I thought the same. Not much dark heartwood though like I'm used to seeing. I looked around and maple and oak dominate the neighborhood. I drug the butt log down to the landing regardless.
First, I worked Saturday. Then I got some relaxation in Sunday morning. Afternoon, I was able to get some maintenance on my loader/backhoe done. Then move some dirt with it. And help my son get some mini-bike time in, it has finally dried up enough. At least on the high ground. The weather was/is beautiful this weekend. A good weekend. My second day off is tomorrow. I hope it doesn't rain. They are saying 20% chance. Fingers crossed I can do this again.
That is one serious machine!! Can't wait to see pics with the grapple! We had another beautiful day today. We cleaned up the rest of the brush and firewood and I made the red pine disappear. The first 2 logs were really nice and I slabbed those up for 4x4 stock. They didnt want any of the firewood from it so I added it to the heap.
Finished splitting two cords of wood that I had cut the last few weeks - getting close to replacing what I burnt for this winter. Worked on the old mower for awhile and got it started and mowed some of the grass for the first time - my son helped me with both jobs. He's getting pretty good at splitting with the maul. Today I showed him the sledge and wedge for the uncooperative pieces. Next weekend I'll show him the chainsaw for the really uncooperative pieces. Then a friend helped me take down 2 trees in my woods - dead for awhile but one was a bit tricky to tell where it would go so I wanted an extra set of eyes. I should get another cord or perhaps cord and a half from those trees. Very soon I'll be ready to start my least favorite part of the whole process - stacking!
Cut down this Red Oak Bucked then dumped at the splitting area. Then went for a walk in the woods to the daffodils.
I feel like a moron, I meant to post my plans on here for the weekend and forgot. I did however split a large pile of rounds yesterday, which I failed to take a picture of also. Guessing I split about 1.5 cords. Gotta love the American splitter!!
I had a productive weekend in the woods. Didn't get much firewooding done though. Spent Saturday grooming trails and girdling trees. More trail grooming and did some vine cutting yesterday. The area I was cutting was a PITA as there were quite a few 2"+ vines. Most were on a 30-40* slope. No wonder this has been one of those "I'll get around to it jobs". Pretty beat today, but glad to have gotten it done.
