    The hottest of summer's sun beats down on the stacks burning out the moisture. The aroma of wood fills the air; acid locust, nutty hickory, fruity, spicy oak, pungent elm all blend together in an intoxicating smell to any wood cutter. Just a couple of more months now, we'll be firing up, but for now we wait.

    The garden is in full swing, busting at the seems with sweet corn, green beans, red ripe tomatoes, melon and a blessing of abundance, but yet we look at the stacks and wait.

    The shorebirds, the swallows, cliff, bank, barn, rough winged, and tree, the eastern Kingbirds and others are flocking up preparing to head south in the next couple of weeks, they know that summer is coming to and end, but still we wait.

    It is about State Fair time in much of the Midwest. The smell of funnel cakes, elephant ears, corn dogs, hay, straw, leather oil, and yes, manure, will fill the fairgrounds. I love to watch the young families headed to the car in the evening with the kids "plumb tuckered out" from trying to take it all in. We sit in the yard, glancing toward the stacks;

    We Wait.

    Well-stated Red Elm! At this point in the year I am getting tired of the heat and humidity for sure, and the thought of an October day cool enough to build a fire is a great thought!

    I agree red oak. I was admiring a weather forecast I saw last week when Newberry, MI was forecast to hit a low of 46. Almost packed my bags... But, they only got down to 50.

    I'm not waiting for a corn dog and fried cheese curds at my local fair that starts this week.

    Mmm 2 stroke smoke from saws too. Amsoil sabre smells delicious.
