    Speaking of enablers.
It’s a steep slope. I innocently asked about a good replacement chain for my MS250 long ago here.
Now there are 3 saws, all kinda stuff, looking at 462s or a 500i for some chainsaw milling since my new 362CM is marginal this bunch has proclaimed. And eyeballing sawmills based on building a timber frame carport currently and listening to the crowd here say how addicting and fun they are.
Had the tractor with grapple, bought and sold a dump trailer (and a dump truck) in my quest for the perfect setup.
And was in a suit in the way to a wedding and stopped for a black locust free wood pile on side of road.
And I don’t sell any. Burn maybe 5 cords a year.
Cult is what it is with good koolaid.

Yeah, I see a sawmill in the future.

I go down this weekend to get eyes on the timber project. Probably bring the drone with to save traipsing through waist deep snow.

8 acres of ash/ cottonwood/ elm / oak. Like $200 a semi load. 4 days worth of hauling is what I was told.

this is the google map satellite view of the first project. Supposed to have two more this size and a 20 acre project this spring.:bug::faint:

What are you going to power it with?

    oiler on max!
    Fuel heavy on the oil

it’s hard on equipment and the driver but still fun!

Only got the 362 to use in it.

got a 28” bar and 4 ripping chains.

just trying to get enough Timbers for a bucking table for now. Make some Timbers for a framework for a sawmill and build the rest as its added.

    there’s kind of a planned progression…

    I think.

I have used mine with 362 as well. You will lose some of the bar length when it is clamped in the fixture.
If you have bumper spikes on the saw you can gain a little by pulling them off.

It is hard work and fun at the same time.
Be sure to let the saw rest between cuts , it is hard on the saw.

    Good luck!

    “Get a mill”, he said.

    “it’ll be fun”, he said….

Krimminee…. Would have been cheaper to build another gun this year.o_O

$180 in chains, $180 in bars, $150 in two hookaroons…

got a stihl and an Oregon hookaroon I was told. The tip is already folded over on the Oregon on the third or fourth swing…don’t think it likes frozen green ash.

got one already. In a way…

got this on new year’s already. Been really handy. I want to wrap the handle with hockey tape as it’s really slippery in yellow chore gloves. Looking to pop a hole in the outer handle or else just grind a spot and spot weld it a couple places to stop it from turn and coming loose.

wanted the jack stand feature as much as the Cant hook tool. So bought a 2-in-1 for now.

    Just wait, it gets better
I started with a chainsaw mill. Then bought a bandsaw mill. And oh yeah. Then a tractor with a grapple.
    You are doomed!

Stihl is made by Logrite. Their stuff is top notch. Made right here in Ct.
I have 3 of their Cant Hooks. Big Yellow one , a normal size with the Stihl color and branding and a baby one for working on the mill.
Same for hookaroons. A 36 inch , a 30 inch and a short one for the mill.

This is a very addicting hobby , sport , job ; call it what you want.
Something tells me you aren't done yet.

What was your plan for the first cut? Did you get rails? Ladder?? or maybe a 2x10 screwed down???
I went for the Granberg rails with mine.

Want to make rails like this. Neighbor has a fab shop and I hope to get the scrape for making these plates and I’ll see if he’s got some 15’ sticks of 2”x 1/4” square tube.

Facing the wood off 40ish acres of wood this spring, I think I bit off a lot more than I expected. Right now, I can’t even wrap my head around the shear volume of wood that really is. Just tells me it’s the right thing to do at the moment.

Today I go get the skid steer and trailer. My cousin has a grapple for me to borrow for the mean time and I’m going to take the drone and go check out this first set of timber this afternoon.

we had a friend that passed away totally unexpected at age 58 on Wednesday night so the plans for the weekend are totally messed up. Dad said the funeral mass is expected to have over 400 people. He was involved in a lot of things in town and the surrounding communities. His loss is already being felt.

That looks like a decent setup.
Keep us posted on how things are going.

I have some big logs at a friends house that are too big for the bandsaw
This thread makes me want to get after it and mill them to size that will fit on the bandsaw mill to finish them up.

Time to get to work. Cousin borrowed me his grapple bucket so I can get to work.

I got a 72” light material bucket for basically splitting into and then dump into the trailer. Sometime this spring I’ll make a couple comparison piles to show the volumn difference and why I got the “snow bucket” for that reason. I kept the dirt bucket that would have come with the machine anyway.

Daughter also went by the log site and sent me these pictures. I got some work to do.

Made my first bucking table today…

Puts the logs at a good height and makes it easy to buck this stuff up.
    BC7FCB80-7C31-4E09-85BB-6601F988F232.jpeg

can plop a 20” on the logs and it doesn’t going anywhere.
