Well, great job fellas, we've infected another one. But seriously FarmerJ , it's great to have you here and you'll like that 362. Only thing it's missing is an XS sticker. I've gotten so bad that I have my saws shipped from the seller straight to huskihl for porting before I even see them. One f these days I'll inventory all my "stuff" and post a list just so I know how much I've spent "saving" money heating with wood.
Somewhere (autocorrect is frustrating) … I didn’t catch that it changed bucking to bunk… My plan is to make a bucking table out of the first load of wood I get delivered… I got a call Friday afternoon it’s being delivered Saturday morning.
Never thought it would feel good to be sick. Just broke down and bought a new BR800 blower after my 600 started giving me a hard time after years of service. Also found a new pressure testing kit from Stihl to test the 4 mix engines , now since I bought a new blower I can fix the old one? Go figure. And also the software cables etc. for the M-tronic saws. Curious what this will tell me. Both of these are from an OPE dealer that is closing their doors. Sickness is an understatement. Guess this is my drug of choice?
So it begins… It’s supposed to be 6-7 cord. Mostly ash and elm. I gotta admit. It’s harsh going from the 362 to the 180. That thing is a screamer and chews up the wood. And the pile of wood chips… Brand new chain with one tank on it. this is an example of how much the depth gauges are being trimmed with the 2-in-1 sharpener. forgot how good it feels making wood.
Yep, very therapeutic. Here's some pictures of my dwindling log piles to make you feel better. If it doesn't freeze up soon I am going to order another load.
Correct. I want to have an inventory of 25-50 chord by thaw. right now, Minnesota winter load increase let’s loggers move 90k on 5 - axle and 99k gross weights on 6-axle rigs. where I want the wood for processing keeps pushing me over 100-150 miles away for wood sources. And most loggers won’t travel over 30-40 miles. Cost was $600 for the wood and $250 for the truck. if I had seasoned wood now, I could sell it for $450 a chord. ($150 face chord) for fireplace size pieces.
Just asking, are you new to this kind of sharpener? I started using one a year ago, and my saw was always bogging down, and I went through chains real fast. I found out from a FB arborist group that these kind of all on one files are very aggressive on the rakers if you’re not careful. Turns out I was pressing too hard, so now I either lightly pull the file up with each pass or actually remove the flat file completely for ‘touch ups’ and put it back in every 3-4 sharpens. They are a neat idea, great if you’re in the woods a lot. I am actually considering going back to just a regular file and a depth gauge though, I think I can be more consistent that way.
Yes, I’m new to these sharpeners. I’m liking your idea of pulling the flat file. bunch of learning curves here this time for me. I started with the 180 today to see how that chain was having taken the depth gauges down on that old chain. It’s been used and abused and they’d never been touched. it really made a difference. I wasn’t ready to see that amount of trimming on the 362 chain. But it didn’t surprise me. it went from making some really good sized chips to ok sized, but you new it was cutting worse. the wood is dirty and full of snow too. fresh cut ash and elm from last week.
Log loads are fun! It’s been quite a while since I have had one big pile to cut on. Will you be stacking it all to see how many cord the load was?

Yea, I’ll be stacking it onto pallets. The nicest organized system of seen is from the “in the woodyard” channel. I like how Chris has 2 chord stacked end to end. It’s on 8 pallets. Five on the ground, one for each end and a divider at 8’. if this is truly 6 chord split and stacked, it should stack into a 12’X16’ footprint.
