I coated up an older pair of my work jeans, something to be waterproof that's not insulated, for the 40* days. Wrangler Riggs. I'm kinda hoping that this coating will reduce wear in chafe areas. I walk a LOT at work, and yall can guess what parts of any pants wears out first. As close as wax will ever get to the man bits. Few more things learned: News print as a soaking up means, also spreads it thinly too My chip brush melted a bit from the heat gun. Heat gun $40 harbor fright. Ran it for several hours at a time no issues. wax on the brush and running the heat gun got good results on the second coat Use minimal heat on keeping the pot liquid, otherwise some elements of the mix settle to the bottom of the pot. Stirring helped. Good light is useful to see by and if it's sun, to help keep things warm. Warmer weather might be better, but 40 and 50F did well enough my work table had residual dust and wood bits. nothing became part of the wax, but it picked every speck of dust. Some wax, drips or splatter from the brush, made it to the 'table'. I'll gladly deal with stiff clothing before being soaked on a 40* day. Pic: one side coated, other side not. Seems soak up more. Dog on hand to assist and warn me of people movements.
Well, I have to say, I’m very pleased to see other people trying it! Waxing stuff is a thing for me, it’s just what I do. I like being able to make good quality things, on a budget. I have waxed many other things like hunting bags, canvas gun slings, my wash bag for traveling lol. Anything that needs to be durable, and last so I don’t need to buy them again. have fun with it, I hope it helps a few people out!
Maybe slightly off topic, but speaking of waterproofing canvas...canvas and a can of outdoor paint can make a good (and cheap) waterproof roof! I've tried it, and its still working to fix a stubborn leak we had going on...first read about it from Rowerwet using it to fix a leaky spot on the church roof (IIRC)
I reckon I'll try this stuff out before too much more. But, I have a boonie hat I'd love to see waterproofed . . .
Initial test passed. Worked a buncha hours in snow rain mix. 38*F. I was warm enough that snow melted on my coat and jeans. The material seemes to get wet i.e. turned a darker color as if wet. I leaned my elbow in a puddle of water on a steel deck, no soak through. At the end of the shift, little if nothing was wet on interior layers. A good rainy day will prove out the rest, but I was pleased to make it back to the office relatively dry.
another update: I wore the coated/waxed jeans for a couple weeks. They were my work jeans since the 2th, my knock around jeans at home and wood cutting/splitting/hauling jeans x2. No wax was ever present on wooden chairs, truck seats, etc. Saw dust tended to stick and not come off easily by hand. Saw chips and other things didn't stick at all. I didn't sweat in them, wearing sweats all the time. They would have been cold to wear WITHOUT sweats. I rinsed them off in the shower with cold water. Some good filth came off, and with my arm in the leg, and water running on the leg, zero water got in. I bet they could be machine washed cold, maybe some detergent, no issue.
