We collect all the splitter trash and store it in the hay loft in old feed bags. I also split pallet slats and store them the same way.
Since we split in our yard..in different places, and on a concrete pad, we're always raking everything up. I wish we had a piece of woods to split in and let it all compost! But all the kindling gets put in a large wooden box in the basement by the dehumidifier. Sometimes it lays in the sun for a while, but gets brought in before too long. I imagine we'll use a bit of that when stove gets intsalled. Since we all enjoy the smell of wood smoke, we'll have a smallish campfire (or burn barel) on splitting day, everything that is not wood stove material, provides heat and light recreationally. So scrap/bark/whatnot doesnt need to be hauled off. sca
1000%. Youngest daughter is on bark duty, oldest is on kindling patrol. I run the wheel barrow, Sweet Melissa stacks. We all enjoy the heat
I was reading the posts a little too quickly and I thought you wrote "I lick tubs". Having said that, what is a lick tub?
I collect scraps and sticks in plastic 5 gal pails. They are food grade buckets that were used for pickles at food joints that my uncle gets for free. I have about 30 of those things so I collect them and if I don't use them, I burn them in the fire pit. I'd rather have them and not need them than need them and not have them. Free buckets and plenty of storage space also helps.
black 5 gallon bucket for size comparison. Ranchers get mineral/feed supplement in them. They are everywhere around here. Ranchers have a hard time giving them away fast enough. Lots of people use them for growing vegetables and gardening too. Handy for lots of stuff
Oh yeah, that totally makes sense now. We have goats, so our licks are small. Wasn't thinking of these even though I see them every week at the feed store. LOL Those would work really well for kindling.
I’ve got a trailer And several drums full of these. BuZZSaw Brad refers to them as nuglies, and they really add up, don’t they? I like using them early for a quick burn in the morning when you don’t need to much heat.
I take shorty rounds of maple, oak, and now mostly spruce and pine and make kindling out of them. All the big chunks of debris I toss into the donation bucket for cutaways to help other people start their fires...... Sawdust, small chips, whatever I sweep up and toss into another bucket......and I run the big stuff in that bucket into the wood chipper. All the sawdust and whatever falls out of my cupped hands goes into the compost pile. The wood chips go into the wood chip pile. It's good not to waste!
I fill up lick tubs or empty 5 gallon buckets with the “shreds”. When I split by the house, everything else gets raked up and mixed with chicken manure for the garden.
I hate to waste anything, especially after going through the work of scrounging wood, so I fill three 30-gallon rolling trash cans with splitter scraps. I have 3" round vents I keep meaning to install on the sides of the cans to improve drying (two per can). For now, I uncork the cans when it isn't raining to air-dry.
