Women Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) pilot Susie Winston Bain at Avenger Field in Sweetwater Texas back in May, 1944. WASP was a civilian women pilots' organization that was created to fly planes in the U.S. in order to free male pilots for combat roles during World War II. They flew planes that delivered everything from produce to war materials and munitions. I've always thought a Hollywood movie could be made about them.
I clicked on this expecting to see something about WWII-vintage Pratt & Whitney radial engines commonly called "Wasps" due to the sound they made during operation, but this is a much more interesting story
