I've used the Stihl 2 in 1 file on the dolkita with the 3/8 chain. I did my first 72 link chain with it in 10 minutes. I'm impressed. I was chucking mega chips. My dude that sharpens chains for me charges me $5 now. He's also the guy with the wood mizer portable mill.

So is the pferd the same as the Stihl 2 in 1? I think I read that they were, and probably that the Stihl is made by pferd.

That day may come for me, but I'm a good long ways away from having that level of competency... or confidence!

Dad bought it 20+ years ago and it’s been sitting in the basement ever since. I have been thinking about buying a grinder but if this will work, great!

What is your method of cleaning a chain before sharpening? I have tried a few different methods and don't like any of them.

Same way I clean my bicycle chains. A 30 minute soak in gasoline then brush it with a stiff brush, then a rinse in clean gas and dry it with a towel or let it air dry. Not the best or friendliest but it works.

I never hand sharpen chains. I tried several ways of doing it, and just found it too much of a hassle. So I have several chains for each saw, and swap to a sharp one when dull. When I have several chains that need sharpening, I do them all with my Harbor Freight sharpener.

    Works for me.

I like to soak them overnight in either Purple Power or Simple Green. Then a tooth brush easily cleans everything off, then a thorough rinse with hot water. Hang and spray with WD. (I re-sharpen before WD)

Those Stihl/ pferd 2 in 1 files are almost impossible to not do correctly.

Try the simple green HD cleaner . You can use it on aluminum without it turning the metal black ,unlike the regular simple green .

I have a real small bucket, maybe 6" round, that I put the chains in. Which ever I use, be it Purple Power or SG, I usually use 60/40 or 70/30 by adding some very hot water. Then every so often I swirl. Next day, the baked on stuff brushes right off.
