There are dead and dying ash all over the place here due to EAB so it should be easy to come by.

Yep. At the moment I and looking for those that are on the ground. Bark comes off easily so drying is sooner.

Ok hoarders, it’s pretty clear that ash is hands down the preferred choice, so I’ll throw in a third wood to see how it compares. Where does hackberry fit in with these two types of firewood? There are tons of that around here so I’d love to get your opinions on that for firewood.

Ash over hackberry. While I've only burned one tree worth, it's still good firewood, just a notch below ash, but a bit above black walnut.

The btu charts show hackberry ~20 mbtu a cord. If you've got a lot of it, go nuts. It's good stuff.

Nope not autocorrected. There’s a group on Facebook called firewood fockers so I changed it to hoarders when I realized where I was posting lol. But you’re all a bunch of frickers in my book!

I used to get hack berries, the morning after a heavy indulgence of adult beverages.

Homey don't play that game anymore.

Hackberry is ok but- tougher to split, lower BTUs, lots of fluffy ash.

Ash is awesome, we are going to really miss it thanks to the eab. I HATE black walnut, it’s messy, the bark falls off and that black dirt underneath it stains, and I mean so much dirt grubs and stuff are living in it. Heat output is ok but it makes a lot of ashes. It takes a good two years plus to dry and my experience has been it is prone to rotting although I’ve seen claims that it’s rot resistant. I’m in central md we get lots of rain some years and that may be a factor in my hatred of black walnut. My wood stays top covered but approx 100” of rain in a year can mess up drying. Walnut is plentiful here, and it, gum, and sycamore are the only species I won’t scrounge. I love pine and silver maple just incase I was starting to sound like a wood snob. :emb:
