Wow Reckless, nice work so far, moving along well.

Was the back held on by anything other than the furnace cement and those two boltsthat hold the upper fireback?

Oh forgot to mention, on the furnace cement - no I have no specific recommendation. I used a tub of Imperial brand grey stuff left behind by the PO.

No but it is connected to the top so...... yes lol. The top was very easy to get off 2 nuts and one rubber mallet hit.

So Im watching the build video I found and I noticed that they no longer use furnace cement for the seams, they now use rope gasket. Pic isnt the best quality sorry I included 2 shots hope one is decent enough.

More progress today and my helper... I am seriously considering using rope gasket instead of furnace cement. Looking at the pics above and my pics the cast haven't really changed at all and there are enough bolts on each wall to pull it in tight.

Definately let us know if the gasket idea works out.... That would make rebuilds a lot easier and more forgiving for sure!

Will do. I think a test burn outdoors is in order once complete, I dont need a runaway stove that isn't fully sealed in my house......

Good thread and great pictures, reckless. It's the first I've heard of gasket at the seams instead of cement - where did you find that info?

The pics 5 posts up from yours was taken from the show "how it's made" on discovery. They visited the VC plant a built an encore stove.

Pics for the wall's and front bolt locations
Front plate comes off first with the center bolt and nut from under the ash lip and two bolts under the airwash on either side

Next the left wall then the right (save right till last due to the primary air adjustment connected to it.

Do you need hardware? I still have a lot left over from my rebuild last year when I had to buy all the fasteners in 100 lots. Let me know if you want any I'd ship you some at cost.

So first snag with all rope seals. The back of the stove is going to need cement since there is no way to bolt the back to the frame like in the new style shown in the picture below
    rope gasket 2.JPG
Pics of my back for reference. The only thing that would be holding my back on would be the lip from the top of the stove and the lip of the walls... Any comments?

They sell adhesive backed flat gasket? Like the type used on glass? I have used it for other applications with luck. They also sell just 5/8" flat gasket and you could cement that in? Double protection.

Well I took it down to the base. Used gasket on the ash drop worked out nicely.

Gonna start final assembly tomorrow. Also tapped the rear panel where the rivets would normally be with 10-24.
