I'm not talking about you doing some hack job MM melting your plastics and leaning out your saw till it seizes cause you have no idea how to tune a saw. I am talking about something like hey my recall assembly broke. Or my ignition system failed and set saw won't run or whatever.

Yes it opens the saw so it can breath. You don't need to do it the saw runs great stock but I like saws at full potential so I do the muff mod and pull the carb caps.

The EPA has forced saw companies to literally run the saw lean and hot which is a very bad combo in the 2cycle world. If you open the can and clean it out you are running the saw the way it was meant to be run.

My love for echo comes from the in wood torque it is almost impossible to bog them down they pull like a beasts. I have a couple old grey models and the newer red and absolutely love them. Next one will be a cs800. I keep telling myself that but it hasn't happened yet...

New CS590 Timber Wolf is in! ( Review )

Here is my thread and how I did the muff mod. I also opened it up later but believe me you dont need to do that. I did just because

Get with me later this summer, I'm 25min south of lansing.
    Have 6 cs8000's to build :)

Back to the 590. Only thing I think it needs is the carb limiters pulled and saw tuned proper. If you have a good echo dealer they will do this for you and not void the warranty.

Closest comparable stihl to the 590 is the non m tronic 362. Last I recall those were 700$+

I know for a fact stock to stock the 362 will not out run a 590 by much. Same bar/chain/wood/operator.

It would be up to the dealers discretion really. You could fight it but is it worth it? And you'd need to score a used OEM muffler for cheap to make it financially feasible. Many dealers would likely honor a non-related warranty claim on a saw with a slight muffler mod. Now if you walked in with a big ole tuned pipe knocking over every display......

Winner-winner! I ended up just being drawn to the Stihl. Buddy of mine's dad owns a Stihl dealer, price was the same as the CS590 and $400 was the top of my range. I'm never going to modify my saw - I'm not mechanically inclined and I don't want to void warranties...so modifying the CS400 or any other saw was out of the question. Just needed a reliable out of the box saw that will last me years of firewood cutting.

Echo might have been a better choice still? You probably won't have a problem but with the 5 year warrenty on the echo you have more than double the warrenty? Last new stihl I bought I got one year, I don't remember if 5hey do the oil this g where if you buy some you get the 2 years like husky, I don't they they do so if that's still the case you would of had 5x the warrentY of the stihl. I just bring this up cause it sounds like you won't be finding any problems your self so that leaves you having to potentially pay for a future repair where the echo you might not have too, at least in that 5 years.

Of course chances that something will happen in 5 years is slim if you use good non E fuel and mix plenty of quality oil into that fresh fuel, and keep the mix fresh.

Very nice saw get that saw screaming and dirty!!!

Just an FYI for others reading all saw companies are under the same emissions regs. You don't need to modify any of them some of us do just to feed the need! They can all be improved but for the avg home user there isn't really a need. I cut for the Villiage and others a lot so I like to open them up.

He ended up with a saw that's a much better power to weight ratio and has the best manufacturer and dealer support behind it. Now and twenty years from now. I'd say he did just fine.

Warranty length is waaaay down the list of items to consider when buying a new saw, especially from a top tier brand.

If you guys haven't run these new 271/291/311/391 saws, these are NOT new versions of the old MS290/310/390. They are a complete re-design on two different sized chassis. Much better AV, filtration, and the engines are decades ahead of their predecessors. So they are clamshell motors in a plastic chassis. That doesn't make one bean's worth of difference to someone who either will not run the saw enough to wear out a top-end in the next 20 years or just plain doesn't want to tear it down to tinker with the internals.

Your right, that's why I said you probably won't have an issue. But there always is the chance. And Echo is not some big box store plastic saw either. I would agree. If it's a stihl with 1 yr warrenty or an earthquake from Lowes with a 5 year warrenty, I too would choose stihl for their reputation. But echo is also a quality brand.

I think he will be fine and in 10 years it won't make a bit of difference. In 10 + years only thing I have done to my ms390 is a new pull cord and new decompression valve after a complete teardown since it fell into saw and seized it. Also fuel lines. I also haven't run that saw at all in 4 years or so.

I had an 029 that kept my family warm for close to 15 years. I did have a bigger saw to use on some of the very large wood. But stihl it will get the job done just fine. Learn how to sharpen a chain really well use good gas and good 2 stroke oil and never look back. If you have any questions just ask many here will go out of their way to help.

Stihl is like Husky. If you buy their oil or gas you get an extended warranty. At least it was that way when I bought my 555.
