I find this to be true as well. More effort per load. I imagine that trunk wood is most likely denser as well. Took down a fallen water oak last week. When I got to the last 4 cuts on the trunk and split them I had greater than 64 sixteen inch length splits ( I call them “ stove wood”).
You would think so...but I'm told by arborists that its actually just the opposite, limb wood tends to be denser.
There’s definitely some crazy tension wood in White Oak limbs. If you think about the amount of weight in a big lateral that is working against gravity. Kind of amazing when I look up and think about how much weight is suspended over my head.
