I remember the big sales pitch when poly-pro came out. I tried it too and hated it.

Some time ago I bought some underwear called therma-stat and that was the very best I've ever had. Still merino wool will be hard to beat. I can't speak for the UA stuff as I've never bought because of the price.

Since I started buying jeans that are fleece lined, I no longer even wear long johns! They are comfortable either indoors or out. We've bought from Bass, Cabela and Carhartt. The carhartts are the best as they last a lot longer. I think the Cabela brand might be a tad heavier though.

I have a pair made by Sorrel, not sure they still produce them. I will probably look at the duluth trading pair next time.

The fleece lined wrangler's from Wal-Mart are the best bang for the buck I've found. $24. I'm hard on work clothes so the cheap ones factor in even if they last a little less.

I have a couple pairs of flannel-lined Wranglers that I like for mildly cold weather.

    "Cotton is rotten."

Personally I've tried both. The whole wicking thing is false. However; I must say that layering with UA vs cotton is much less bulky. When it comes down to it, I've found that nothing can compete with wool.
