Well, after supper I got bored. Fueled up the 261 and in no time that red oak was rounded. Got one load on the trailer with 12 more rounds on the ground for tomorrow. I will split it by hand and it’s gonna freeze here tonight so I anticipate good temps while doing the splitting. keeps me out of the taverns I tell my bride
Last weekend while checking out some tree stands in my woods I found two oaks on the ground. So today was a two oak day. See the ladder tree stand? I have killed 5 bucks out of it, four with a rifle one with a bow. I took this one from the tree stand. The other oak was really tall. I scribed it first with the 192. Then the 261 went to work. Got 39 rounds out of it before the first limb! It was a very good day in the woods I just wish it was cooler
There weren’t many limbs. All trunk. When oaks grow in a thick woods, they have to grow straight and fast so they get the sun the neighbor can’t. It’s a race to the top of the canopy. Yard trees get very “limby” because they have no competition.
Awesome pics ole!!! Nice long somewhat straight oak is where it's at in my book. Makes for very efficient cutting, splitting etc.
I split today. Those two trees provided a couple nice jags of wood. Spose to rain here tomorrow so I will stack then. I think my wood hauler may be over loaded. The springs are straight.
Started hauling this winters fuel into the garage. Little over a cord here I got a ways to go. Depending on severity of winter we usually burn 2 1/2 to 3 cords.
Nice clean, organized indoor storage racking. I have 5 eight footers like that indoors also. Not that I am tempting mother nature to bring on the cold anytime real soon!
We all know cold temps are coming! I was sweating my arse off and I started at 630 this morning. I will stuff another cord into the garage when the motorcycle and bicycle open up their parking spot. Then when the wife isn’t looking I will stuff 2/3 of a cord or so into the basement.
For the most part, I am out of the firewood for sale business. An old buddy with arthritis is my last customer. I just can’t say no to him. He wants three cords next spring so I started getting it ready. Got 2 1/2 cords stacked for him will finish it next week. Then deer season starts!
I just spent 6 hours walking our woods. I have hired a private forest consultant to write a new plan as our MFL expires at the end of this year. So we get a tax savings for the next 25 years. He liked the diversity of our property yet he told me I have zero oak regeneration. Duh, I knew that. In 50 years it will no longer be an oak woods it will be a walnut and hickory woods. This bitternut ain’t gonna make it he has warts (galling) so I will turn him into firewood soon.
My woods is to muddy to cut but the neighbors woods has dried out some. So today I cut amongst junk cars and buses. Two red oaks came down over the winter and the neighbor says “when they hit the ground they’re yours” Saws ran good but tomorrow will be a challenge. A big red oak came down upon a bunch of tires some with rims. must be careful
Interesting day. I cut the neighbors for about 4 hours. I was surrounded by buses and volkswagens. Had to really concentrate around all that metal. Then I went for a look see and found another big red oak the loggers dropped and forgot to take. I got 26 rounds out of it before the top starts. Tomorrow I finish that top and work on one next door. These tops are huge.
I have used wood to heat our homes for many years. I have burned every species Wisconsin has to offer, I mean everything. That being said, it’s hard to beat dry red oak. I might even say impossible but that might be wrong
