A little work has been done! Dropped another 15 trees, chipped the tops and piled the logs! Hauled 2 loads out over the weekend. Finally had a normal day of work to get out on time and start grinding stumps.
Got up to the cabin late last night after dark. Went for a look see this morning and what have we got here? The dead pine fell over sometime in the last two weeks. A most fortunate location to land! Got him cut up in no time and got the lawn mowed. Then checked the trail cam and the card had 3150 pics. WTF. I found a honeysuckle shrub that might be the culprit. It was leaning over into the camera range and was triggering the shutter. I did have a few bucks and this little guy on it.
Walked the cemetery across the road from my house this morning. I retired from mowing it the town board hired an 18 year old kid and he’s doing a fine job. Found a black walnut growing out of some type of shrub. I am sure a small furry rodent with a bushy tail planted it as there are no other black walnuts nearby.
I found this interesting but I am unsure of the source. Percentage of tree cover by state. I’ve been to Alaska twice. I think it should be higher than 35% but what do I know,,,
Well well. Couple days ago I got a letter from a mighty fine gentleman on this mighty fine forum. I won’t name names but he *might* be a vertical splitter. (So I’ve read). The Taco has more bling bling. The “established in 2012” didn’t make it. The backing glue was dried out. I absolutely love it and the Taco will wear it with pride. A big thanks to you know who.
Looks great. Mine is crumbling (I couldn't get it well adhered) and if one looks very carefully its in the same spot on my back window.
We just spent 3 days up at our cabin. Going to find out just how good my State Farm Homeowners insurance is. There was a hail event up there about 3 weeks ago. I have two damaged roofs. Just filed a claim over the phone. I have to meet an inspector up there sometime soon. oh boy
I just got off the phone with my State Farm agent to go over a few things about changing my homeowners policy, and for some reason she mentioned that any claim having to do with my house or cabin is a PITA long drawn out process. So...good luck.
Well, I just put a chainsaw together and fueled and oiled it up. My wife’s brother called to report an oak and an elm “down” across a trail in a woods his wife rides her horse in. Just south of our house. Her horse would NOT bushwhack around the downed trees so he asked me to clear the trail. It’s 82F here right now so after supper I will go on the attack. I have not investigated the scene yet so wish me luck!
The bro in law tree is rounded. It wasn’t “down” the fully leafed top had broke off and laid upon his trail. It was hung up but not my first tree rodeo. It was a 61 year old white oak. Here is where I ran out of fuel on the 261. You can see the standing trunk. Refueled and dropped the trunk. Got the trailer full. You can see the small elm that was damaged so I took it also. I won’t pick up the rest til after the 4th. Gots lotsa family stuff at the cabin coming up. Those last 15 rounds are very heavy. I will need my atv ramp to roll them up. I can’t pick them up. I’m old. I was soaking wet when I got home but an ice cold beer is in my hand right now so I’ll be fine!
After 5 wonderful days at our cabin with friends and family (and beer) it was time to get back to work. I must inform my fellow wood hoarders I was wrong dead wrong. The “white” oak my bro in law gave me was a bur oak. I knew after the first split it was bur as there was zero vanilla smell. Bur is indeed in the broad white oak family and sometimes leaves do deceive me. But my nose never does! I got it split and will get the rest of the rounds picked up tomorrow. .
Back at it. Got those 15 rounds of bur oak picked up and split/stacked on the monster wood pile. Got a nice jag out of it. Had to go over to my Amish friend and procure two more pallets. As I was stacking the last load I saw sunshine about 40 yards away reaching the forest floor. Hmmm. Sunshine in July in a thick woods can mean only one thing. Another red oak has lost his top. Lotta wood in the top: And even more in the still standing trunk: I bet there are more down I’ll have to walk my woods. Not doing anymore cutting til cooler temps.
