Took a nice long walk in the woods this morn. No chainsaws in hand was just doing a walkabout. Found a shed antler. methinks it's been laying there since like 1981,,,
found another shed today I had Mich St in the final four in my pool when they got beat I was pizzed so I walked it off gotta be quick to procure them cuz the critters in my woods like to chew on em
We've all got our vices. Mine are usually Nicaraguan or Dominican and are not to be smoked in the house... so I'm usually browsing FHC from the comfort of the garage. Do you do any projects with the antlers?
Not directly. I have a buddy who makes lamp bases out of them. So I give my nicer ones to him and he barters me blue gill fillets frozen in a solid block of ice in 5 qt ice cream pails. I don't fish but I love those little blue gill chips they are sooooo good so it is a good deal for both of us!
I thought of you yesterday when my wife and I were out walking around in our woods. No, we did not find any antlers but a neighbor's dog did find one a couple days ago. I told him to do more training with that dog and he'd have a winner.
Finally finding some nicer ones. Found these in my woods this morn. Keepers! critters wrecked this one This one will get traded for bluegills if I don't find the other side if I find the other side I will do something with em as a set
Sometimes a man has to admit he was wrong. My turn. I posted a couple times how I disliked the Husqvarna 445 my son gave me. Been cutting a whole bunch of Black Locust in the last couple weeks. I have run two gallons of gas through the Husky and my Stihl 261. I think my problem was the Husky wasn't broke in. It is getting stronger by the tank. I was premature on my opinion. It has a 16" bar and it feels good in my hands now. I like it. Am glad the Husky is in my arsenal,,,,
It didn't even get that cold by Lake Michigan. It typically doesn't get that cold. I need one of those $60 CL carts for my atv. They are usually ~$100 for anything decent.
So, today at my request, two DNR Foresters toured my woods. It is 40 acres. Last winter I put in a written request for some help improving my Black Walnuts. They contacted me about a week ago and we agreed to meet today. An informal timber stand improvement was talked about. They each had orange paint spray guns. they concentrated on spraying undesirable trees around my 16" to 20" diameter breast height walnuts. I have my work cut out for me I tell ya. Almost 300 black walnuts were IDed and they sprayed a whole bunch of elm, ash, hickory, hackberry, and even some older not very good looking red oaks that they want "put on the forest floor". To insure the black walnuts get all the sunlight. I am 60 years old and gonna try and wallop everything they marked but it is going to be quite the task. While they marked, I harvested morels. I sent some home with them.
I'm thinking to save the hickory too. With the other species removed, maybe it'll be more than enough openings in the canopy? But then again, we're not there and you are. At any rate, it sounds like we will be treated to a lot more of pics coming form you! Work safe.
I wouldn't say nobody. Hickory wood is becoming a popular wood to use because of its contrasting colors.
I best be getting to the woods. Neighbor kid found two sheds yesterday in a CRP field south of my 40. Two different bucks. Unsure at this time just how long I will be in the firewood for sale business. I brought home a Drolet Escape 1800 today. Chimney goes in early April. ain’t life grand
