Almost done I am thinking. Spent a couple hours just dorking around. I went here and there and backtracked it was one of those days. Oak: Then I worked up the oak that was threatening my son’s deer tower. I arranged the rounds around the tower base to make a turkey blind. I will sitting on a 5 gal pail hiding behind the rounds come May 14th when my permit starts: Dropped a dead red but had to harvest a small elm to ground the oak safely. Got 30 rounds out of it. Then on the way home a shagbark hick fell across one of my trails the only saw that had fuel was the top handle it worked fine. Found three more oaks that were missing their tops so I grab them tomorrow
I believe Scotty Overkill has some stickers but he sent mine a long time ago by carrier pigeon and the damm thing flew south for the winter so when it returns for spring hope it's still carrying it.......lol....
I got after the three oaks that lost their tops last July. It was such a pleasant afternoon to make wood. Got 80 nice rounds out of the 3 trees without messing with any top wood. I had the trailer with me so on the way out I cut some short no bark elm rounds to split down for kindling. The Husky was somewhat sharp when I started on the little elms. I can garunteeeee it is no longer sharp! Those little elms were like petrified wood. I saw sparks coming off the bar in bright sunshine no less! Tomorrow if the rain holds off I start hauling and hand splitting oak. I hope it rains we need it here.
Between wedding stuff, choring, and finally sleeping in(until 7!)-got a rag tag pile of cottonwood, pine, soft maple, and honey locust split up and on the clock for the boiler next season. Now to stack it..
No hauling, sawing, or stacking today. Just splitting. My intention was to get everything split I had cut but ran out of water. Hand splitting makes me thirsty. I have 3 rows of oak rounds to split. There’s always tomorrow. Heard a tom turkey gobbling. He better watch out May 14 or I’ll put him in my crock pot,,
Got all my rounds split today. Then found 2 more oaks on the ground so I guess I am not done cutting. Then I hauled 2 loads of splits to my monster woods pile. The guy from town who wants rounds has been calling me non stop so I got some ready for him. This white oak lost his top and is really wet so I will sell it to him. Green white oak is hard for me to hand split. No problem for him he has a hydro. Then I loaded up some black cherry for him and parked in the driveway. He is coming out tomorrow. never a dull moment around here
The guy from town who wants rounds called to say his truck is broke down. Unsure when he can come out. So today I fricking hauled his rounds and stacked them in my shed. They will sit til he fixes his heater core. Black cherry and elm. I got everything else I had split picked up and hauled to my woods pile. Done for now,,,
There is a method to my madness. I got a turkey permit starting May 14 and I don’t want to be dorking around my woods hauling his rounds if I am hunting in there. Now I don’t care when he gets his truck on the road. He already paid me $200 for rounds.
And done. I had a bigger tom coming in to my calls but he hung up at about 85 yards. He answered everything I threw at him but I couldn’t close the distance. The fog was thick all at once there were 6 Jakes pecking at my decoy. There is a dead turkey not two yards from my decoy. So at 725 am I squeezed the trigger and was done. I already got him processed and it’s nap time. I got up at 3 am and was in my spot at 430.
I like to sneak to my spot whilst the birds are still in the roost (sleeping). Then just sit and watch the sun come up.
Since I got my turkey yesterday I got back into firewood today. Who hand splits oak when it’s 88F? ME! I have everything split and stacked that I have cut. Today I found a hung up oak and a black locust to work up. Not when it is 88 tho. It will be cooler next week.
