Well well well what have we got here? Grandpa had a handle guy on the splitter today. Our 4 year old grandson learned some handle duties. After a half hour he got bored but he is only 4!

    edit
It’s an electric splitter doesn’t make much noise at all but the first time we split a big red oak round she really POPPED so he asked for the ear muffs. Wasn’t my idea!

Hey, teaching kids in the next generation the value (and fun!) of physical labor—that’s always a good thing! They will remember working with grandpa when they are older and cherish those memories. Merry Christmas!

Last night I finished splitting the last of my 9 trailer loads of mostly oak in the shed. Got 11 face cords ready for fall 2024 sales. Everything I tested was 25% or lower so it should be ready. Weather dudes are calling for 6-12 inches of white stuff here today.

I guess the rest of the day will be spent cleaning some guns. Good day for it. I am not plowing the driveway till the snow stops.

This snow we got today was really wet and it is currently 34F with high winds. My back yard and the field south of my house has hundreds of snow rollers. Have you guys ever seen them? I will take pics tomorrow but they look like hollow round bales of snow made by mother nature.

ole Had to pick up my jaw when I saw your stacks, awesome to say the least. Also, thanks for the pictures of the snow rollers. Never seen them before.

I was unable to get pics of the dozens of snow rollers that formed late yesterday. We got more snow overnight and they caved in (they are hollow) and disappeared. I found a couple survivors. I’ve never found them in January they are usually a March occurrence around here.

I should have figured out a way to take pics of those snow rollers in the dark. They have mostly disappeared but there are a few remnants left.

Walked my woods today. Three more oaks on the ground. One of them right where I was cutting last fall! You can see the rounds behind it.

IMG_2999.jpeg And that tornado last Thursday went right over our house. The funnel was not on the ground yet. A mile away it did a lot of damage. Not my pic:

It was 58F here today so I went to da woods. No firewood was procured I was attacking vines and poison ivy. Vines can scar/strangle a really good saw log if they get big enough. I usually hand saw them but today I used my Stihl battery saw from our cabin. Very light 6# without the battery. Don’t tell my wife I had a chainsaw on her scale:
IMG_4214.jpeg I started at noon and battery died bout 3pm so I was satisfied with the run time.

    IMG_3008.jpeg

Much more efficient than a hand saw.

On the way out of the woods I bumped a woodpecker off of a nice red oak. It broke my heart. It’s the oak on the left side of the trail dead center of this pic.

    IMG_3013.jpeg

In another ten years this would have been a nice sawlog but not anymore.

    IMG_3012.jpeg

It’s dead. I will give the woodpeckers one year to harvest their bounty then this red will become firewood.
    Have at it boys:
