That's the thing right there. I wouldn't mind burning $8 on a turkey every year, but getting enough rounds downrange to feel comfortable shooting it would suck.
Some guys are addicted and buy $75 of mouth calls a year and $100 worth of choke tubes every few years.
I work with a couple of those guys. I’m not really a latest greatest kind of guy so it doesn’t do much for me I guess.
Here’s a good one from this morning. Right in front of the blind! Must have heard the camera clicking or something and has to check it out.
Just put a nice gobbler to bed. Have to see what the morning brings. Wow is it wet and green out today all of the sudden!
Doubled with my dad this morning! Both birds 9” beards and 1” spurs. My guess is 2 year olds. Tons of gobbling on the tree starting at 5:35 then they hit the ground and got pretty quiet. There was at least 5 gobbling in the group. Around 730 I hit the box call and got cut off by a gobble around 50 yards from us in some thick brush. A few minutes later out came two hens followed by the gobblers. Got to watch them strut a few minutes before we rolled both at the same time. Good times!!! Mine next to the trusty 10ga. Dads bird, it flopped in the wet grass so it’s a bit soggy.
Got it on film too.... here’s a snapshot as I pulled the trigger. Camera was on dads barrel so you see my muzzle blast from the right. I must have fired a split second before him.
Good work!! I was wondering how you did on my way into work this morning. Saw a reply to this tread as I was on the way and made me wonder how you were doing at the time you were probably messing with them. I wish I would have bought a few of those HR's back when they were so cheap at Walmart. I wanted a 10 gauge and a few rifle calibers.
I want to see that video!! Put it on YouTube. Make it private if you don't want it visible to folks and shoot me the link in a PM. I thought after I shot mine I should of figured out how to rig up my go pro to my gun, or just set it on the ground.
Thanks! its always a good time and never a dull moment when we go. On another note.... turkey tenders for dinner!!! Now I’m full and ready for bed!! The legs thighs and wings are in the freezer and I found a slow cooker recipie I want to try, but we will save that for another day. Going to take my oldest (5 1/2 years old) for his first turkey hunt tomorrow morning so we shall see what that brings. I hope at least some gobbling.
Came close yesterday, had one about 75yds our and gobbling like crazy but wouldn’t close the gap birds gobbled like crazy on the neighbors property this morning....
At least there’s some action! Nothing worse than no gobbles. Watching a lone hen wandering the field across from the house right now.
No turkeys were harmed by me today. But there is always tomorrow! I called in 4 Jakes to my decoy but they live to see another day. Found 6 morels so at least I brought some food home! edit my wife of 39 years just informed me “you better shoot a jake Thursday or Friday we need more to eat than morels”. gawd I love that woman,,,
No morels today but harvested a two year old tom. I had him all worked up in my woods for a good half hour. Then he shut up and I saw him in an adjacent hayfield. So I left my hen decoy and ran about 60 yards to set up on him in the open. Called once and he promptly ran back into my woods TO THE DECOY. Which was 55 yards away from me. He is in full strut gobbling at my decoy so I jacked out the 6 shot that was in the chamber and hit him with a 4 shot at 55 yards. I had to deer snort him before I shot to get him out of his strut. He didn’t go anywhere. My old bolt action 28” barrel full choke Mossberg never lets me down,,, You can see the hen decoy if you squint Typical two year old round here. Didn’t weigh him guessing 20 lbs, 9”beard, 3/4” spurs. He is gonna taste real good.
Awesome. Nice bird. I like those Mossbergs. I shot my first deer with a 20ga. looked exactly like yours. Sent from my SM-G930VL using Tapatalk
Thanks. My old Mossberg has kilt a few turkeys. It is from the 60’s I think and it is a model 395T. Not sure but I believe the “T” means turkey model because it has a fixed rear sight to go along with the brass front bead. I bury half of the front bead at 40yds into the rear sight and it throws a real nice pattern with 3” turkey loads
I have my grandad's old bolt action. It's a plastic stock. Probably from the 60-70s and I'm thinking it's like JC Stevens or some hardware/Western Auto or random store type gun. Y'all have me wondering now. Going to pull it out and look. It's not like a traditional bolt like the Mossberg. This one pops out when fired and racked straight back and then I believe the bold pushed in to lock the carrier in fire position.
