Have you dropped the rakers on your chain yet? It doesn't take much to make quite a difference.

Eric VW nailed it in his post. Even if the teeth are sharp, if the rakers are too high, you can't get a bite. And watch out if you get them too low! Pure excitement. I tend to drop mine a bit more than I should if I'm only felling big trees and bucking them on the drop spot. Then it matters way less than if you're clearing light brush or smaller diameter wood. It does literally pull the saw towards the wood hard, or flips small wood right at you.

No, I went to visit with my sisters. I noticed the saw sort of chattering or whatever you call it, as I was cutting the locust. I will read the tutorial you linked.

Explain this; "Always file from the inside of the chain out just like the tooth." what is considered the inside?

Front the center of the saw out. Maybe think of from where the muffler is mounted as the 'inside' or in joinery terms, from the short point of the tooth.
    Clear as mud?

That tells me nothing but hopefully I am doing it the correct way; I can always look it up on the net anyway.

It means file it from the same side as you do your tooth! :hair:

(I think I'm beginning to understand now.....)

    Another option:
Take the chain in to someone who may work on chainsaws. Chances are either they sharpen the chains, or they can direct you to someone who does. They'll take care of the cutters as well as the rakers. It's a lot cheaper than buying a new chain!

Why would I do that? Besides Jon said the chains were worn so I knew that from the beginning.

Yes, I have been doing it correctly; pretty much common sense here you know.
