No caliber restriction that I aware of at all on private or public land

There would be on public at the periods that are outside deer season. So during deer season you could shoot deer and squirrels with say a .243 but outside deer season but during squirrel, IE first of the year , you can't have a caliber larger than 12 gauge with bird shot or like #6s or a .22 caliber. I think that's how the WMA regs read. But not going back through it for these purposes.

Up here we Gray and Red Squirrels, nobody eats the Red's (little pain in the azzes) all they do is let every deer in 10 miles know you're around. Haven't hunted Squirrels in 30 or 40 years, but here is what I used to do after skinning and gutting. Boil the carcass for 20 minutes or so. Pull the meat of off the bones and throw it in a skillet with some oil and mushrooms, peppers, and onions, and stir fry. Spit out the pellets as needed. You're bringing me back, oh yeah, clean the guts out of the sink before mom comes home and sees it and starts yelling at you.

First time I heard of a Cur dog was a couple years ago, they are not too popular up here. I googled "cur dog Maine" and the first hit was an add for some puppies, half BM Cur, some Walker, some Blood and some Plott. I called the guy, went right over and ended up with two!

I managed to stay married after that incident, I have this addiction to Hounds you see. The two on the right are half Beagle.

Not a hunter, nothing against it, just never got into it. Love to get out in the back country and let the Hounds do their thing.

    yea, lol.
we smoked them today. Unfortunately, Jake cut his foot up pretty badly and is going to be out of commission for a few days.
I guess that gives me an good excuse to deer hunt the last few days of season

yea. let him rest. but I know a good squirrel dog that's harder on him than you to sit at the house. esp if he sees you get in the truck in camp with the gun.

I need to try to hunt deer a few more times before the end of year.

I was going to ask, his belly looks pretty red, thought it could just be the picture, but the leading edge of his rear legs look pretty tore up too, mine get it in the same spot.

    Well good news,
I walked out to the pen this morning to change his bandage and put more medicine on his foot and he was walking around like nothing was wrong with him at all. He had tore the bandage from yesterday off sometime during the night and tore his new one off today in less than 5 minutes. He's going to stay in the pen all day today and tomorrow but will hopefully be able to hunt Friday.

it's FUN!!! hunting without them is stupid I think. just randomly walking looking for them or like stand hunting for deer and wait for them to come out.

Dog Hunting for squirrels is like coons. You turn the dogs out the just start hunting , the run all around sniffing and looking. they tree them and once treed they will Bay (bark) till you get there and either kill the squirrel out of the tree or call them off the tree by saying your command, usually "in a hole" then the dog should forget it mostly and hunt another. Sometimes the miss them treeing out to another tree so the squirrel might not even be in that tree anymore but usually they see them jump out, or they literally are in a hole, nest or laying on a big branch on the top out of sight.

I don't have a dog or ever have but have hunteD behind a few before. use to go at least once or twice a year with a buddy. Both when we were in college and then after we got out. Haven't been in at least 6 years I guess. I miss it.

Hit me up. You're just right down the road.

Maybe we can work out a hunt together one day

I've got a lot of hunts promised out right now but we'll try to make it work

    I may do that.

if you have that many folks in line we could try next year. but there still is lots of season left. Deer season is basically over come Monday so the woods will be all clear for small game.

I don't know how you feel about public land but I know a few spots down my way, that are pretty isolated where they are and pretty easy to keep a dog on the public land. several spots have fox squirrels, and lots of them.
