Tree ID please

Hey Fellas, might have a free scrounge here if you guys can tell me what type of wood this is
The lady was told it is oak so I'd really like to make sure. I tried checking my VT tree ID but it's still loading on my phone soooo....

Here's the pics I got today



It was a pretty big tree about 30" at the base and split into main 3 trunks from there.

The bark looks similar to sugar maple but it didn't smell like it.
Any ideas??

 

Oh and here are a few pics of a smaller tree next to where it was that looked very similar

 

That first pic looks like hickory bark to me.

 

My VT tree ID app just finished loading... Yea it def looks like bitternut hickory or possibly pin/chinkapin oak?

 

Did you happen to see any nuts around the tree? Acorn =oak, hickory nuts (looks like space footballs from Flash Gordon) would of course be hickory.

 

I wish I would have looked better but I didn't notice. She said she had it cut down this past winter so it's been sitting there for a few months now.

 

Next think I would do is a google image search of oak leaf and hickory leaf. One looks similar to your pic and one not so much.

 

Ok I'll try that. I'm leaning towards hickory bc the grain pattern doesn't look like oak to me

 

"Definitly" a type of smooth bark hickory. The leaf at least rules out oak for sure.

 

I'm sure it's Hickory also. The leaf gives it away. I'm not very good at identifying the different Hickory species, other than Shagbark. There's quite a few species too and the leaves all look pretty similar.

Now getting back to the score... Great score! Looks like they cut some of it up for you too, even to the correct length! How much is there?

 

Pignut or mockernut hickory. For sure.

Save some for cooking / smoking / firepit. It smells like BBQ.

I'll def have to! How does hickory split/burn? I see it's pretty high on the btu list

 

Burns awesome, splits considerably less than awesome.

Another question now... What's the drying time for hickory? 1-2 years like most woods or up to 3 like oak?

 

I go two years on mine. Your going to like it....

Well I got rained out this morning. Too much going on this weekend so maybe next weekend. Doesn't sound like it's going anywhere
