Tree I.D.

Can any of you identify what this starting to grow on the hill behind my house. I thought I knew but, really, its January it can't be, can it?

 

Closely related to the tulip poplar, what you have are daffodil poplars.

 

All of the bulbs I planted in November are already popping up. I don't like them sprouting when it's still too nasty outside to be able to enjoy looking at them.

 

Better get them cut and split. I have heard up to 3 years to dry.

Would it be crocus? Many time that will come up even thru snow.

 

Those are daffodils, of some sort. Crocus greens are much thinner, like a grass.

Might be skunk cabbage it will come up fast and it is one of the rare plants that create heat. Skunk cabbage comes up early sometimes right thru the snow it will have a strong onion or garlic smell.

 

I smell it stronger than that and often smells of something green and stinky. Often mistake it for teenagers up to something in a forest while walking trails.
