Maybe in the market for a new trailer in the near future. I currently have a 16 foot trailer with 2 3,500 lbs axles with one axle brake. I've made due with it for like 14 years... Gotten my $800 dollars out of it... But with my GT tractor and loader on board its, it leaves very little space for wood. Plus hauling a vehicle is out, unless its a short distance, which I have just not real fun. So looking at have to haul the kids truck out to VA military base possibly in the next month. I'd like to look at a 20-22 footer. Any thing in particular that I need to get or look out for in this purchase? Brands?
I bought a Big Tex 12’ utility trailer and I really like it. If you aren’t in a hurry you may find a great deal on CL. Good luck and post pics!
If you are going to haul tractor and wood, I would definitely get an equipment trailer. Get a 10k rated with dual axle brakes. I really like our Big Tex dump trailer. This one might be close to you. Yes, they are relatively close. I was looking at them earlier too. But I know the brand seems to be good. The towing capacity of my truck is like 10K. Would 14K be overkill? As long as I don’t load it beyond the 10 K? Which I don’t think I’d everyone get close anyways. Just talking out loud here...
Tilt decks are sweet...so is aluminum...when new. Once they get some age and miles on them they often start to crack...and used aluminum is very difficult to weld on! I have an aluminum dump trailer that I wish I had left where I found it...someone made some previous repairs (poorly) and I need to figure out how to fix their fix (they used steel to reinforce the aluminum...galvanic corrosion much?!)
I got a Kaufman tilt deck equipment trailer rated for 14,000 (two 7,000 lbs axels) great trailer and I love it for hauling my skid steer. It has 6feet up front that don’t tilt so it is not really well suited for hauling cars and pickups. I’ve used ones where the whole deck tilts and they are pretty slick, no ramps to mess with and there’s no such thing as overkill. Eventually there’s gonna be a time you’ll wish for more capacity. My wise old employer always said “Figure out how much you want/need and go at least 50% more”! He was a very smart man!
Take a look at the registration and towing lows in your state for registration pricing, inspections, brakes, CDL, etc. I'm no expert but there are usually break points for these. I'm real happy with my CAM Superline "Warrior" 10K equipment trailer. Very simple but very high quality at a a great price (16' for $3695, 2020 Cam Superline 76.5' X 18' 10K "Warrior" Equipment Trailer | Performance Trailer Sales in White Marsh MD | Cam Superline Trailer Dealer in MD for utility trailers, flatbed trailers and enclosed trailer dealer in MD) but I believe it is only available in in 16-18'. Deck over and aluminum are nice but the price goes up quickly.
What size is your sons truck? I have a 20 foot equipment trailer that I’ve hauled an f250 with my truck, but I would definitely want a trailer with a longer wheelbase if I were pulling it across the country with a half ton
Almost hate to ask...but what's up with hauling the 'stroke? (and where is your FHC window decal Mr?! )
Well... it is a ford... My buddy NEVER drives his truck to work...or in the rain, and never in the winter. But his car was in the shop and he had to drive it. He did his normal morning routine and stopped for gas...
it’s a Dodge Dakota Quad Cab. Just went out and measured. Axle to axle is 11’ and front bumper to rear bumper is about 17.5’
Ruh roh Raggy... We had a kid do that in one of the dealerships trucks years ago (old school IH 7.3) and then he drove it 3-4 miles back, but said it was running funny...fortunately it survived. I'll let this lil derail alone now Chvymn99
Stake pockets are must so you can add walls to carry firewood, etc. Rub rails are really nice to have, too. These allow you to attach your straps/chains anywhere along the the length of the sides. My trailer doesn't have them... yet. I will have a local fab shop weld some on soon.
