There not always a total loss. But even if they just stick their head out and get smacked they usually will spin around at impact and wack the side of the car with their but and the hams with get blood shot. Or if they get hit and bounce away where they hit or slide down the road is blood shot too. At least the loins are fairly protected.
A typical 3 1/2 y.o. buck around here. They grow FAST! Unfortunately, they get mowed down very efficiently during firearms season. So, around here, with antler restriction, most 1.5 y.o buck get passed, most 2.5 y.o bucks get shot and anything over 3 yrs old is a true trophy.
I read an article about Penn trying to get rid of Sunday hunting cause yall are loosing my generation of hunters cause that is many only day to go and that those hunters are not taking their kids so that one could be lost too. I was talking to my wife yesterday about what appears to be less hunters. I am a forester and work in a county that is like 60% public land between the Army Corps of engineers and the USFS. When I moved here 10 years ago you would see trucks parked all over. The last few years I have been noticing fewer people and therefore trying to take note of if there is or not trucks at popular spots. I asked our other forester if he has noticed a decline in hunters at these popular pull offs that always had a person at them and he said he has seen the same thing. As a hunter in the woods myself on public land here I do not see the amount of people or competition to get to the popular locations.
Yes, that is where I sat the first 2 days of season. It is about 85-95 yards from the tree the camera is on.
These pictures are from the morning of opening day of PA gun season (I only shoot archery). Notice the time stamps on the bottom. Whatever, it was still before legal shooting time, but that buck would have been 15-20 yds from my treestand standing broadside. Oh well.
I had read deer like peanut butter. Appears ours don't care for the cheap stuff I bought at the dollar store or it was because it was creamy. Al
Here is what I think got the peanut butter jar as I haven't found it any where near there. By the way that is a thorn apple tree with some sharp thorns too. I moved the camera to the front yard the afternoon of the 14th. Al
I just couldn't tell from the pic. I thought coon at first then, could tell it wasn't one, then was like is that a porcupine , or wolverine? Haha
I left a camera out after the season and went to collect it yesterday. Not the best quality photos and no date/time stamp but still pretty impressed with these cheap Bresser cameras. Battery life is great and still snapping pictures in pretty extreme weather. These guys survived last season. Hopefully they are still around this fall Looking at the brow tines, I am pretty sure these are three different bucks
