I wonder if this was a car hit? Too bad as I don't think he will make it through the winter. He has the making of a really nice buck if he could make it another year or two.
My dad started hunting this area for deer in the mid 70's and I've been hunting it with him since the early 90's. We started using trail cams about 15 years ago. We never saw any sign of elk in the area until we got these pics the last two years.
This a cool thread. When you guys post a pic could you also post what make and model camera you have. I want to get a trail cam and some of the pictures in this thread are really nice.
94BULLITT ive got a few stealthcam g42ng. Cabelas usually has them on sale for around $100. Definitely a user friendly camera with lots of options that takes great pictures. Here's a few and a video. The first two are a picture of my computer screen so they're a little grainy. And congrats bocefus78! Great buck
I have a couple old cams, and a new tasco brand IR one I got last year. The old ones worked, but the new ones are even that much better. That tasco was maybe $60 iirc, so you don't need to spend a ton of cash to see what's in the woods, and when. It's fun stuff.
Every one about that price I have bought lasted 2 or 3 seasons at best. They all work but the more expensive ones have better triggers and seem to take more faster. that said I will probably buy a cheap one again. they take good pics.
We've had our best luck with Moultrie and Cuddeback cameras. Good pic quality, good trigger. The problem we've run into with every camera is that after a few years they start eating batteries really fast. Cleaning up what corrosion we can seems to help. This year we went to an external 12v battery. Not as convenient but it'll run the camera forever.
Last cam I had the plastic holding the batteries in busted. I got one of those 6v lantern batteries and wired it into the old wires. it would run forever. all season.
At present I have Browning Dark OPS and Wild Game. I've also had Cuddeback and one other that I don't remember the name of. So far the Browning is the best but yet the cheap Wild Game cameras are several years old and still going strong. They do take more batteries though. One thing is the pictures I post won't be as clear as others simply because I do not take still pictures; I take all videos then if I want a still shot I can pick the spot in the video and capture that picture but as stated, it does tend to blur the picture some but I still have the videos. As for keepers, I usually keep only the buck pictures unless there is something interesting going on when does are in the pics. Back in the day when I started using trail cams I thought the flash would have no effect on the deer. I was wrong! So I went to IR but those also have a "glow" to them that some deer don't like. Usually it does not bother the does much but it can some of the bucks for sure. I like the Dark OPS because there is no glow for them to see. It also has a microphone so you pick up any noise and also has the temperature although not really accurate but close. The Browning seems to be the best I've had so far for battery use as the batteries last a long, long time.
My old trusty cams are cuddeback iirc. Weird name, but these things are like the old fold straight 6. They just keep running and running... Nothing special, low res, no ir, they just work. The tasco, I think is this one. $30 now. Tasco® 5MP Infrared Trail Camera - 182125, Game & Trail Cameras at Sportsman's Guide
Thanks everyone for telling me what kind of camera they have. I want to get a couple for security purposes. I want one for my front yard because almost every night there are deer out there.
Look at the harbor freight like 6 camera DVR system, for security. it's only a couple hundred $$ and you have it on DVR. then get a deer cam for deer
94BULLITT I did not go hunting this morning and did not need a game camera but as I was at the kitchen sink, I looked out and there were 3 does in the yard; closest one about 10 yards.
This guy only showed up on camera one night this year. The land owner nicknamed him Walter. Finally got a day time picture of him It's funny how they always look smaller when I am in the picture
