And boy did it pay off! I hopped on CL last night to check the free section for wood as I often do before my day off. Found one for a guy that had cut down some 30 trees on his property and was looking for guys to come out and take. In the ad he mentioned mostly box elder and said some mulberry. I have enough dag burn box elder so I wasn't too amused about that. But I mounted up the Ford and threw in the 562xp and headed southeast to Mukwanago. Boy was I glad I did! He didn't mention there was a cherry!! GOLD! Luckily nobody else had found it yet as there was already a few guys out there. Also got me some good big pieces of Mulberry. Throwing them glowing yellow chips off the bar. Excited to get those in the stove in a few years!
Haven't unloaded it yet. It's windy as frig out here and cold. Came to warm up. And check out FWHC Not too much, but worth the drive for that cherry alone I think! I don't come across cherry too often...people must hoard that chit. Mulberry is also supposed to be top notch. First time with it.
anyone that uses terms like "glowing yellow chips off the bar" deserves such wood. Congratulations upon your score!
It was also fun playing with my relatively new 562xp My first professional grade saw...and my lord is that thing awesome! Worth every penny. It blew through that cherry like pine would on my 460 Rancher. It was expensive...but no regerts.
Congrats on the wood score and new saw! I like to burn Mulberry, burns great...just gotta watch out for sparks when you open the door...the coals throw all kinds of sparklers! Cherry...meh...I don't know why people get so excited about it...I mean its OK, but just a mediocre firewood IMO.
Thank you sir. And yeah, I've seen others mention the fireworks show with mulberry. But idk, cherry is like an elusive unicorn in my neck of the woods. It smells so good too.
I was going to mention that CL and to you. It's too far for me to haul, but for you it's a close score. Glad you found it!
haha thanks man. I was figuring you had seen that ad too. But yeah he was right across the border into East Troy. Not too bad.
Cherry carried the shoulder season here for us, shoot, well into the real cold weather, actually. Of course it’s a superb smoker wood, so I had to save some for the summer time smokin’ season
Cherry is okay. I use it for morning starts, and day time. Overnights I use hickory/beech/maple. Nice score though!!!!
It's all btu's. And it all adds up. I'll be ending this burning season on cherry and elm. That combo puts out some great ghost flames.
Mulberry is really good. I’d rather have it than some of the maples. You will be very please when it comes time to use it.
I'd be interested to see some pictures of the mulberry if you get a chance: bark, grain, end grain, etc. I had a mystery tree once that one observer thought was mulberry. It was really excellent burning, but all gone now.
When cut, it bled a milky white sap. It was a very yellow wood and seasoned almost reddish. Burns excellent. Mulberry?
Great score, my man! Save a little of the cherry and mulberry for cooking over the pit, that's some tasty wood!
I made the mistake of putting a small piece of mulberry in the microwave once (long story, I'll have to share it sometime ), wife wasn't impressed but the house smelled sweet for a day...
Uh huh... Maybe you'll share how you arrived at that statement, too... Must have been a little on the tough and chewy side, eh?
