So, I went out to my wood lot and hauled a load home. I also scoped out some recent dead falls and 2 yes that I had cut and left mother nature to drop the rest of the way. Load 1 Load 2 Load 3 the rest of the beech and some shagbark hickory rounds Load 4 hickory Load 5 the rest of the hickory. A couple of branches I need to either cut and split, or just cut and stack and wait. All loaded up. The Audi making the Germans proud. I split the hickory rounds and let it sit. I took a straight grained piece of the hickory to resplit and take a mm reading. Just for posterity's sake.
Here's my upcoming work. My sugar maple that wanted to go the wrong way, so I left it for ma nature. She dropped it exactly where I wanted. This is a nice size tree. I noticed it was dying. Had I had wedges I could have felled it the right way the same day. I've got wedges now. A big sugar maple "branch". Nice Z in there, huh? Here's where it came off of. This elm I got stuck in other trees. Ma nature again dropped it exactly where I wanted. Here's another dead barkless elm that is standing. How much you wanna bet I get this one stuck too? Maybe I'll get lucky and the top branches will break off allowing it to fall all the way. Then there's this. Shagbark. Now it was rotten at the bottom, and hollow a ways up. I'll do a few exploratory cuts to hopefully find solid wood. It took this guy out. A sugar maple that was previously struck by lightning. I used to live at the house on this land from age 7 through half of college. I recall when it got hit by lightning, and the next day it was smoldering. You can see where the charring is from that lightning. It was still living last time I saw it. I'm guessing the 60 mph winds we had a few weeks ago dropped the hickory. I know there's other stuff to cut, but I'll concentrate on the downed trees first. There's also a large cherry tree that fell on the top of the woods as well as some random stuff that fell. I also got the reminder that 5 sleds full, fills the trailer.
8° and light snow. I heard there were negative windchills. I had to wear my cold weather balaclava to keep my face and ears warm. The work bibs my wife gave me for Christmas are awesome. No more cold getting between my jacket and pants, and no more Carhartt jacket riding up, pulling my shirt layers up exposing skin. Yeah, that was super annoying. The Carhartt jacket now behaves. That and that xa22 fiskars hookaroon sure made life easy. Next up, install the Oxford heated over grips onto the bayou.
Nice work Horkn-I am quite envious though 8* is pushing it-I'm 8 days post-op and start PT this morning-hope to be doing exactly as you by March...Though fully torn, the main rotator cuff tendon was easily accessed this time, surgery was completed arthroscopically and the healing has begun...Have a wonderful and safe New Years my friend and hoard on!
Horkn, nice job, great pictures. Still too damm cold with the negative temperatures and high winds for me to start my tractor and head out back to cut. Getting itchy though.
So thats the Holz youve been talkin about, nice one. Still I think your forest-vehicle is one of sophisticated kind, i wonder if Audi ever gonna make some Trucks, MB just got one out i think. Looks like another 2 cords or maybe 3 to me, youd be using youre bare hands to cut those or did you used one of these chainsaw things? Looks like fine piece of land ( Ein schöner Fleck Erde).
