There's several variables to felling, Have to be there to look the situation over. Then that only covers the visible , sometimes there's hidden internal issues, hollow, rotten, metal. ....>>> Even the pros get it wrong sometimes.
Here's one from husqvarna. If brand new to felling, I'd get a couple wedges and do a conventional notch, then start a back cut. Insert wedge then finish backcut towards hinge. The wedge will hold the tree if it sets back on you before pinching the saw. Once the saw is pinched its hard to get it out. Anyone around you that you can learn a few pointers from? Dropping trees isn't something that you just learn off watching a couple videos. Many things can and will go wrong and can cause death. A lot of the videos on YouTube are bad for trying to learn any kind of technique. There are a few good ones though if you can wade through the not so good ones. Here's another thst shows the conventional notch and wedge
I probably will save a few of the rounds, like the one off the stump and cut them Into coasters or trivets. Black walnut isn't super common around here so I'll make the best of it!
Snapped a few pics of the hinges for you guys. You can see how the bite bore cut starts out angled, then turns parrall to the hinge. You can see the high, shallow face, or notch The ash: The walnut
