I can't remember if I mentioned this but I took my cheap curved shaft trimmer and did a muffler mod to it!! It has some guys now and sounds cool. I use it around the house

I ended up removing the black bumper with the string cutter on the bottom of the guard on my KM 94R. Now instead of only having about 8" of line on each side, I can run it with about 12+" of line cutting twice as much grass in the same amount of time. In addition to swaths being almost twice as big now, I find I am using less string as it isn't continuously being "snipped" off every time you bump the line feed.

Just the other day I traded in my Stihl KM 55 with a curved shaft and bought a Stihl KM 131R with the straight shaft brush cutter attachment! As soon as I got it home I had to find something to trim and cut. Wow :bug:does that thing have the power, I feel that it's very well balanced and nice to operate.

Picked up a Weedeater Featherlite on the curb - 18cc of muscle. New carb, fuel lines and Skoal Can Air Filter Box - that adds a touch of class. It's so lightweight, you barely notice you're holding it.

Those are a classic example of engineering a product to do what it has to do, do it well, and do it with minimal cost. Good when they're running, not expensive enough to cry over when it needs major repairs.

Yeah, the Weedeater acts like the little engine that could. Been trimming around fences and 500ft of sidewalk edging weekly and it chugs along. I run .095 line (should be .065, I'd think). I'll look out for more of these - they're worth $8 of carb & fuel delivery parts.

I picked up the KM90 last year. It's my first gas-powered trimmer/brushcutter. So far I've been frustrated with the string attachment. Auto-feed doesn't work that well, but maybe I got a defective unit. Blade is three-pointed, and does what it is supposed to. I've had to used it on thick grass a few times (like when the string attachment wasn't auto feeding) and it does OK, but clearly not designed for that.

Another thing that just happened is that the nut that I tighten the tommy screw into when I remove or attach the shaft trimmer fell out and I lost it. Need to get a new one.

So not a ringing endorsement of the Kombi...but the motor itself starts well and hasn't given me any issues and I guess that's the more important part.

They are designed to be "tapped" at full-throttle. Most either do not have enough rpm's or tap too gently to actuate the head. It helps to tap on a hard surface if possible and don't wait until the strings are less than 3" long.

Out of all the tap feed heads I've used, Stihl's is by far the best. Easy to wind/reload, replaceable parts, and very durable. They sold an arbor to adapt the Stihl 25-2 tap heads to Echo trimmers, it was a match made in heaven!

That is basically the same unit I retired this year. Had it for about 17 years and bought it reconditioned for about $100. Tough little unit...just not tough enough to withstand the abuse of a teenage boy .
Gutted the muffler about 4 years ago which gave it some extra kick. :dex:

I have one of those big box store like $70 weed wackers. It's yellow? Can't remember the name but sure it's made by MTD. I did a muffler mod on it and it's amazing the grunt that it gave it!!

I picked up a Dewalt 20V trimmer a year ago, it fits my needs perfectly. One battery is enough to trim everything I need on my half acre, and it only cost me $100 without a battery. Nice and light, quiet too! More than enough power for grass and weeds.

Thanks for the tips. I guess there's a learning curve. Any advice on the nut falling out? To me that seemed weird. You'd think it would be in there securely. It's not like I'm rough on my equipment either.

Just got a Worx 56v trimmer.. Wow! Pull the trigger and go. Push a button, twist the handle and it's an edger.

They usually are some kind of locknut. A nylock if I remember right. If yours isn't, have the dealer double check that the right nut is in there. You can always get a metric Nylock to throw in there yourself too.

I like the SRM225 for basic yard work, a FS250 for heavier grass, and my FS460 when it gets nasty!!:D
