Daughter had this nice Doug fir cut down this morning. The bark was full of mushrooms, actually standing dead. Better to get it down now as opposed to falling over this winter. Going to be some NICE WOOD! I will try to get some better pictures later.
Here are some better pictures, originally i think a main root was cut, which killed it, its worried me for a long time. The guy did a pretty decent job of it, its all on the ground, no one got hurt another fantastic day!! Now to get it cut up shorter, and split.
Just watched a video claiming shrooms were a sure sign of root rot. I assume a cut root could have the same effect. Either way your right. Best to get it down safely before it damages anything.
I posted some pictures of a big limb i cut off the neighbor lady's tree it was literally covered on one whole side with shrooms. Big one's, her tree will need to come down as well. Its pretty rotten up high, and every year it puts limbs on her roof. Its literally a dying tree.

THANKS!! It is GREAT wood, and the timing was perfect on the falling of it. Another year or so it might have gone ''punky'', i did find some grubs in some of the rounds that were from the upper part of the tree. Went over there today and split a bunch of it by hand, used the 36'' Fiskars splitting axe. Split almost like a cedar shake, well, ''almost''. Its really good sound wood, i'll get some pictures of the split wood tomorrow. It was hot today, took a peanut butter and honey san for energy, and a water with a squirt of some kind of light sweetener. Took a break or 2 in the shade, sun was out, it started to get hot, but, BOY it really felt good to be splitting wood again!!! Its been a while. I'm so thankful i'm as healthy as i am at 72, i am truly blessed!! Not a sore muscle, or anything and i feel great.
Well, no pictures of the split wood, BUT, we had fun!! Yup, we took one load to our daughters mother and father in law, he has cancer, needs lots of Prayers he's in not to good of shape. Then, had enough for the guy who helped me so, he could take some nice small stuff to his mom, it was split as well. He was great help, enjoyed being hot, sweaty, dirty, and a little more deaf than he was when we started, lol. But, we had fun. I got to use my trailer, worked great, nice wood hauler and well built. Gave the ole fiskars splitting maul and 36'' splitter a good work out as well. Even used the 22 ton hydro splitter as well. Tomorrow i'll go over and get some of the wood for us, its nice wood, might remember to take the ipad so i can send some pictures of the splits i'm going to have. Once again, GREATLY BLESSED, boy, what a fun day, for the 2nd day, i'm feeling great, no sore muscles , no aches no pains. But, got a nice big ole sliver under my thumb nail, i'll dig it out tomorrow. Daughter gave it a shot tonight, but, decided to wait until tomorrow. Oh, we had a break and ate a sandwich, made from FRESH CAUGHT TUNA, canned about a week ago. Came home, guess what we had for dinner another fresh tuna sandwich!! It just don't get much better than this!!
These pictures do not show much of the wood I got from the daughters big Doug fir. But it will give some what of an idea of the quality of the wood. Sorry for the bad pictures, the sun was in my eyes, and its getting crowded back there, lol. The ''finished wood'' at the far end are some big pallets a guy gave me for stacking wood on, but, i HAD to get this wood stacked, so, the big pallets got left out this time. But, i did make an air space on the bottom of the stacks with a 1/2 pallet. Boy, that's about the best doug fir wood i've ever gotten. Now, to slice up the big stump, i cut it off the base yeasterday with the Stihl 460 magnum, what an animal!! I'll have to bore and wedge the cut off stump, lots of good tight grain wood in that baby. long burning, and nice evening wood yet to be cut from it. I'll quarter it, by hand/maul, wedges, then put it on the splitter.
Cut the stump down to almost nothing today, used the Stihl 261, boy i like that little saw, its fast and really does the job, cut a big chunk off of it then X'd it so i could split it, then used the splitter to take it down to more manageable sizes. Really some great wood in that stump. Little bit more clean up and it'll be good to go, oh, the bark is really thick, and makes for a good hot smaller fire, quite a bit of that left as well. Thinking there might be a nice level pickup load left to pick up. I'll get that this week. Tree guys coming up to knock down some oaks that are left in the back yard. He's going to take lots of the big limbs down. They'll be a more manageable size for me to take down later if the daughter wants them taken down in the future. Other wise it was just another good day of cutting fire wood.
