If you keep your eyes so fixed on Heaven that you never look at the Earth you will stumble into Hell.

A pedestal is as much a prison as any small, confined space.

Half the troubles of this life can be traced to saying “yes” too quickly and not saying “no” soon enough.

Religion is a way of walking, not a way of talking.

With the merciful you show yourself merciful; with the blameless man you show yourself blameless; with the purified you show yourself pure; and with the crooked you make yourself seem tortuous. For you save a humble people, but the haughty eyes you bring down. For it is you who light my lamp; the LORD my God lightens my darkness.

A nurse who knows—During my second month of nursing school, our professor gave us a pop quiz. I was a conscientious student and had breezed through the questions, until I read the last one: “What is the first name of the woman who cleans the school?”

Surely this was some kind of joke. I had seen the cleaning woman several times. She was tall, dark-haired and in her 50s, but how would I know her name? I handed in my paper, leaving the last question blank. Before class ended, one student asked if the last question would count toward our quiz grade.

Absolutely, said the professor. “In your careers you will meet many people. All are significant. They deserve your attention and care, even if all you do is smile and say hello.” I’ve never forgotten that lesson. I also learned her name was Dorothy.

Attending a wedding for the first time, a little girl whispered to her mother, “Why is the bride dressed in white?” The mother answered, “Because white is the color of happiness, it represents purity, and today is the happiest day of her life.” The child though about this for a moment, then said, “So why is the groom wearing black?

Who of us is mature enough for offspring before the offspring themselves arrive? One value of marriage is not that adults produce children, but that children produce adults.

What you learn after you know it all is what counts in the long haul.

I hear a racket in the yard, there seems to be a fight.
I look across the frosted sill and see a horrid sight.
A squirrel and a blue jay, both greedy to the core,
Are sparring for the corn cob and I go for the door.
I shake my fist and tell them, you’d better share that cache
And they both hit the cedar boughs like a fuzzy bluish flash

Not they’re both in chorus, enjoined in cause as one,
Agreeing for the moment that I’m the son of a gun
They perch there close together and squawk and chatter and scold.
It’s amazing how enemies gather as conflicts begin to unfold.
We’ve something to learn from Nature, we’re awash in its humbling ways.
And like the squirrel and blue jay, our foes are but acts in plays.

Punish the first offender (maybe even the first offense of a rule) severely, for in him the greatest hope of reform lies.

Always imitate the behavior of winners when you lose. Or at least sometimes.

Look over your shoulder now and then to be sure someone’s following you.

Clerk: “Sorry, sir. You have to take the whole bird.”

    Stock Market results:

Helium was up, feathers were down. Paper was stationery.
Fluorescent tubing was dimmed in light trading. Light switches were off.
Cows steered into a bull market. Pencils lost a few points.
Hiking equipment was trailing. Weights were up in heavy trading. Knives were up sharply.
Elevators rose, while escalators continued their slow decline.
Mining equipment hit rock bottom. Diapers remained unchanged.
Shipping lines stayed at an even keel. Sun peaked at midday.
The market for raisins dried up. Coca Cola fizzled. Balloon prices were inflated.
Caterpillar stock inched up a bit, and Scott Tissue touched a new bottom.

An article in National Geographic several years ago provided a penetrating picture. After a forest fire in Yellowstone National Park, forest rangers began their trek up a mountain to assess the inferno’s damage. One ranger found a bird literally petrified in ashes, perched statuesquely on the ground at the base of a tree. Somewhat sickened by the eerie sight, he knocked over the bird with a stick. When he struck it, three tiny chicks scurried from under their dead mother’s wings. The loving mother had carried her offspring to the base of the tree and had gathered them under her wings, instinctively knowing that the toxic smoke would rise. She could have flown to safety but had refused to abandon her babies. When the blaze had arrived and the heat had singed her small body, the mother had remained steadfast. Because she had been willing to die, those under the cover of her wings would live.

He shall cover thee with his feathers and under his wings shalt thou trust.
