Why do they call it health insurance. You only need it when you are sick. Why not call it sick insurance?

People who say they sleep like a baby usually don’t have one.

You can’t be a rationalist in an irrational world. It isn’t rational.

Most women marry thinking that their man will change; most men marry believing their wives will never change. Both are usually disappointed.

If ignorance were a muffler, the world would be as silent as a tomb.

Being depressed by the poor isn’t much worse than being bored by the rich.

A needle would be much simpler to find in a haystack than in a barrel full of needles.

Look in the windshield, not the rearview
    By Pastor Mark Jeske

Is a sharp memory good? Depends. It’s good when you remember names, birthdays, anniversaries, appointments, and promises. It’s bad when you remember past slights, insults, failures, injuries, mistakes, faux pas, other people’s faults, and every embarrassing and humiliating thing that’s ever happened to you.

Even worse than remembering those negative things is stressing over them, obsessing over them, fuming over them, hating on yourself over them, consumed in ancient resentments, trapped in an endless memory loop in which you are the fool.

It’s time to let go of your pain memories. They don’t define you. In Christ you are a new creation every day. Washed by his grace, honored with a new identity, loved by your Father, empowered by the Spirit, you can choose your self-image. You are walking toward an endless future in heaven; you are Satan’s slave no more: “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:12-14).

Take out the trash and leave it out there. Look in the windshield, not the rearview.

Sometimes you eat the bear, but sometimes the bear eats you. Montenegrin saying

Never start an argument with your hands in your pockets.

Psychology is wrong in imagining that when it has analyzed evil it has somehow disposed of it. It is also very wrong in theory that by studying the abnormal they understand how to treat the normal.

The brassiere is over 100 years old, and 57% of adult Americans still do not know how to spell it, although they certainly know what it is.

Happiness is not something you experience, it is something you remember.

Much of the earth is covered with water, although pollution is fast catching up.

A silent sea gull foretells of raging storms.

I went to church this morning. It was not Sunday, but I went anyway.

The church I attended wasn't awash in religious rituals. My seat wasn't a polished wood pew and there were no hymnals or bibles at the church I attended. Nevertheless, the spirit of God enveloped me. I could feel His presence.

I go to church early this time of year. This Sunday morning was not all that different than other Sunday mornings. I was greeted by the pre-dawn moon and stars. Silent night. All is calm. The moon lighted my way to my seat. As I sat quietly in the dark morning allowing the cold breeze to wash my face, the pink hint of a new day filled the sky. No artist could paint the canvas I witnessed this morning-or any other sunrise or sunset. It was as if God was gave me a front row seat to watch the rebirth of a new day. It was spectacular.

The steeples of my church are not straight. There no crosses atop them and they bend in the wind. But the steeples in my church still arch towards the sky, as if to pay homage to their creator. They are prettier than any man-made church steeple. I feel at home in their perch.

Though I was the only person in my church, the spirit of fellowship was strong. The choir was wonderful as usual. I was serenaded to any number of beautiful songs by the birds who signaled the arrival of dawn. I closed my eyes and let them sing their songs to me. I smiled. How Great Thou Art.

As the dawn's light opened my sanctuary to my tired, old eyes, I slowly and quietly turned my head to and fro to see what other of God's creatures was in my sanctuary. The gray body of a whitetail deer materialized out of the fog seventy yards in front of me and then disappeared back into the sanctuary. Squirrels chattered. The distant sound of ducks added to the splendor. I thanked God for being alive to witness the beauty of His creatures, both great and small.

Dead leaves quietly drifted to the forest floor. As I watched individual leaves fall and coat the forest floor with their beautiful shades of yellow, orange and red, I was literally watching God's natural cycle of the Fall take place in front of me. If you haven't sat quietly in the woods and watched thousands of leaves fall lazily to the forest floor, you are missing one of God's most beautiful art shows. Go and watch this and you will thank Him for it.

Even amongst the beauty that surrounded me, my predator extinct was on full alert. That's natural, the way it is supposed to be during this season of harvest. As I slowly turned to see what was behind me, three does cautiously picked their way through the underbrush towards me. They sauntered directly under the tree I was sitting in. It wasn't time to kill. It was time to observe and learn. The time to kill and feed my family is coming soon.

Watching the deer amble by reminded me that I had a special invite to this beautiful sanctuary, which is their home and my Season Of Harvest Church. I can think clearly there, have conversations with God. In this church there is no clutter, no e-mail, no cell phone, no pagers, no one to steal my attention. I'm at peace there. I like to be alone there with just my thoughts and memories and rest and recharge my internal batteries.

In a mere few days, the woods will come alive with activity of buck deer. And I will be there in this sanctuary to bear witness to it-as I should be. To be somewhere else would be against who I am.

Something from deep inside me pulls me to Season of Harvest Church. If you listen closely, you hear the voice of God in the wind as it blows through leaves and the treetops. Enter quietly and be still and you'll be welcomed into the sanctuary where you will witness the beauty that God has created.

    Angels: God’s child protectors
    By Pastor Mark Jeske

Some of the sweetest religious art depicts winged angels hovering over children walking or sleeping in their little beds. Those images are not just pious fiction or romantic projections, as it were, from the imaginations of anxious parents. They represent an important truth about God’s care for little ones whom he thinks belong to him too. When our children were baptized, God put his claim on them and assumed the responsibility and obligations of Fatherhood.

Angels do God’s bidding for the care and protection of all his believers. But they have a special role in the lives of children (a role that we would love to know a lot more about). Jesus just hinted at this mighty comfort for every believing parent: “See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven” (Matthew 18:10). Although Jesus’ main point was for grown-ups to treat children with respect, sharp-eyed parents quickly spot an important word in Jesus’ remark. That word is their. Yes, our kids apparently have their own protecting angels.

How wonderful of Jesus to show that we have help in our parenting. The world is full of dangers that threaten us all but especially our little ones—disease, injury, violent people, Satan, and death stalk children too. How good it is to know that their own angels have to appear before God personally for reporting and instructions.

Every cloud has a silver lining; on the other hand, every silver lining has a cloud.

Be eating one potato, peeling a second, have a third in your fist, and your eye on a fourth.
    Irish proverb

Middle age is when the narrow waist and broad mind begin to change places.

The story is told of a man who got a permit to open the first tavern in a small town. The members of the local church were strongly opposed to the bar, so they began to pray that God would intervene. A few days before the tavern was scheduled to open, lightning struck and it burned to the ground. The people of the church were surprised, but pleased. That is, before they received notice that the would-be tavern owner was suing them. He contended that their prayers were responsible for the burning of the building. They denied the charge in court. At the conclusion of the preliminary hearing, the judge wryly remarked, “At this point I don’t know what my decision will be, but it seems that the tavern owner believes in the power of prayer and these church people don’t.

    One way
    By Sarah Habben

“There couldn’t possibly be just one way to God. There are billions of people in the world!”

    “What about Jesus?”

    “What about Jesus?”

So went a 2008 interview with Oprah, who feels every religion beats a path to the same bliss. Heaven is for anyone who lives with love and generosity. Jesus is optional.

But Oprah doesn’t get to make the rules for heaven. God has his own rules for reaching his heaven—Option A: through Jesus. Option B: be perfect.

Heaven is accessible if we show perfect love and generosity toward every person (telemarketers and tailgaters included), in every thought, at every moment.

    Are you perfect? Me neither.

I can’t earn heaven by my own innocence. But what about Jesus? As a man who is also God, he lived under God’s law without ever sinning.

I can’t pay for my own sins, let alone someone else’s. What about Jesus? As God who is also man, Jesus’ holy death paid for the sins of all people of all time. His resurrection is proof of that.

I can’t reach heaven by following the Way of Good Deeds. That just puts me on a collision course with Satan and hell because I’m not good enough. What about Jesus? He says, I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6).

Billions of people. Billions of lifestyles. Billions of ways to hell. Only one way to God and eternal life in heaven.

    Option A: through Jesus
