Life is subject to ups and downs. A man without a smiling face should not open a shop. If you don’t have what you like you should learn to like what you have. Men cease to interest us when we find their limitations. No man can climb out beyond the limitations of his own character.
A man of sense talks little and listens much. Little brooks make great rivers. Small talk is sufficient for little men. A wise man makes his own decisions; an ignorant man follows the crowd. It’s better to have a little than nothing.
A little man sometimes casts a long shadow. As a man lives, so shall he die; as a tree falls, so shall it lie. He that lives wickedly can hardly die honestly. Don’t live on the borrowed opinions of others. Live within your means; and live a little below your means and you’ll be able to save some.
Breathing is not living. Living in worry invites death in a hurry. The man who makes an honest living is at peace with his maker. If you’re living like a pig you’ll die like a swine. A fool loaded with books is still a fool.
A hungry stomach is beyond all logic. Don’t look for perfume in the doghouse. Seek and you shall find. The wife who loves the looking-glass hates the saucepan. A good face is a letter of recommendation as a good heart is a letter of credit.
A talkative fellow is like an unbraced drum: he beats a wise man out of his wits. There are braying people in the world as well as braying asses. They talk most who have the least to say. No fool can be silent at a feast. The talk of fools is a lecture to the wise.
The shallowest people are the most talkative. Greedy people are hard losers. A man who marries twice is a two-time loser. When the wolf is slain the lambs do not mourn their loss. If you have nothing, you lose nothing.
Life is a lottery; most folks draw blanks. Love will find a way. Forced love, like fanned fire, will never whet your desire. He that falls in love with himself will find no rival. Love, smoke, a cough and money can’t long be hid.
Love knows no obstacles and grows with them. All mankind loves a lover. Lovers think others blind. There is more pleasure in loving than in being loved. As is the lover, so is the beloved.
