This tree won’t give up

Came across this tree last year. It seems to have followed available sunlight or the decades. Hanging on by the roots. I think this is the kind of tree Lowe’s buys for lumber!

Looks like an ever-elusive serpent black cherry. I've seen some twisted ones, but yours takes the cake!

 

I was sure it is cherry. Certainly a great learning tool. Would make great firewood for sure

hink if this was a thousand years ago, the Shawnee, or Miami would have revered it as sacred.

I wouldn't be surprised if there are roots where the trunk is in contact with the ground.

That a wild example, for sure.
We had a cherry that the skidder ran over, it was flat on the ground and had small trees growing up from the trunk.
This was a big live oak at a restaurant in Brunswick GA.

 

Here's another one. We found this while hiking in New York state. I'd like to think I'd fight that hard to live! Puts me in mind of a song...

 

Might be an interacting tree to "fall" as its already 1/2 way there.

MikeInMa yes, the roots are still in the ground; at the edge of a dry stream bed. The "stump" is not any longer.

 

I have one here up in my woods. Not sure why I haven't cut it.

 

Nature is amazing. The cherries here are mostly leaners. I suppose they twist their way up into the canopy and fill out.

I have 4 cherry leaners going over the neighbors property due for removal in a few weeks.
