How much room for new inventory and what do you have on hand for rounds?

 

I have room for all kinds of inventory.

To me, inventory is any wood that's on-site, but yet to be CSS'd.

I have a couple of red maples dying from the top. There's also some ash trees to come down.

Further away, potential inventory exists at my BIL's and SIL's.

 

Those racks look good. Do you think keeping them higher off the ground helps in drying? What do you have CSS at this point?
It was a grey and drizzly start in the Worcester area, never warmed up. Good day for being active outside.

 

I wanted to raise them up a bit to improve air flow underneath and to get the rack itself up off the ground.

I'd guess there's ~10 cord css'd.

 

They'll work on both counts.

You've made efficient use of space to pack 10 cord in there!

I measured both saws from tip to wherever to know where 22" is on each. No more measuring or guessing.

how many days of wood did you get split today Mike?
We brought in a couple trailer loads today, probably three weeks worth in cold temps. Thinking about each load or days work in terms of days of heat, motivates me.

Let's see... about 1/6 a cord (half a 1/3 rack). Red oak 24/7 burns.. I'd guess 10-14 days. I'm a lousy guesser.

 

Stacks look great Mike. Is the 16" mark on the Fiskars just to set aside (or not split) stuff that's too long?

 

Yeah, pretty much. Just handy to have.

I'm not as disciplined as some others, to measure each 16" before bucking.

As far as mesuring, the mark on the chainsaw trick works fairly well. I used a sharpie to mark the saw, but I know where that spot is now. Funny enough, that trick is my dad's.....I remember him flipping the saw to the length of the tree, bar tip even with the last cut, and then making the cut where the bar studs were....or the witness line was.

Everyone's situation is different.

For us, No kids and no debt, live below your means but be comfortable. 2 decent incomes. Save, save, save, unless you are paying off debt. Paying off any long term loans should be a priority.

If finances don't generate issues, you're halfway there.

Life is all about choices.

On the edge of the woodyard, are my compost bins. As I was tossing in a load of kitchen scraps, a section of compost moved. After poking around, a rat jumped out. A flipping rat!

Saw it again this morning as I was laying in a trap, baited with peanut butter.

I placed it right in the bin, in front of it's hole.

Pardon my garbage.





Where's one, there's probably more.

I have no idea where it came from. There's no demolition going on around here.

There's been an increase of vegetable and fruit trimmings, such as cantaloupe rinds, being added.

When our 3 days of rain is finished, I'll be sure to give the pile a good turning which should kick up the heat. Adding some fresh grass trimmings will help.

I also have some hardware cloth, should I need to fabricate a vermin-proof cover and hope they aren't getting in a different way.
