My son had a major shoulder injury playing ultimate Frisbee. Called me to check with out orthopedist to see if he would recommend surgery. He said, basically, no way, let it heal. Which I told my son (MSFT employee, lives in Seattle).

I recommended that he call the Seattle baseball team and see who operated on their pitchers. He did, they gave him the name, he went to the MD, had the surgery. Had a fellow employee who had the same injury at the same time, went to a different surgeon. Fast forward about a month, and my son is doing physio, the other man is nowhere near ready for physio.

This was about four years ago (at least). Chris is very active, snowboarding, cycling, climbing, hiking, Frisbee etc. No residual issue. Who the surgeon is makes all the difference (thirty vs fifty makes bit of difference too...).

Any kind of arm injury, I always say check who treats your local baseball team's pitchers. Could also try football team's doctor who treats quarterbacks. Leg injuries check with pro basketball teams.

Just like the best way to find the best surgeon for a particular issue is the head OR nurse. They know.

I got to thinking on that and you know… I'd have sprung for the $50 dollar surgery too. No sense quibbling about $20 dollars… ;)

(Glad your son is doing well)

The Dr I see for body pain is the Dr for the local AAA baseball team, a local college, and a few others. He is also very much a 'surgery is the last option' kind of guy. I've been through phys therapy and cortisone shots on other joints, but this is a first for the shoulder. It seems like about 6 mos after I heal up from something, my hard headed self forgets about stretching and loosening up and next thing you know, me and the old ice pack start having an intimate relationship again. I think I might get a new tattoo on the back of my hands that read 'Stretch Dummy':emb: I've never had surgery and would like to keep it that way, but these 8mos - 1 yr healing times are really cramping my style.:(

I do appreciate the kind words, thanks.
