Yeah, not likely though. I looked for witness marks from a splitter too, but not all splitters leave those. The didier splitter I use doesn't, but the mtd splitter of my parents does leave those two semi circles that should be familiar. If the "stop" end of the splitter is smooth it won't leave marks.
As someone who also splits everything mostly with maul & occasionally with sledge/wedges & just 4 pound axe for the easiest stuff I'm very impressed. My stacks aren't as neat, most of the wood isn't as straight nor is the total quantity as great lately. But still have between 12-14 cords split/stacked at 2 locations, down from almost 17 in 2014. Only cut 2 cords since June 2015,90% of that is still unsplit, half of that is still in the woods that needs to be hauled in yet.Just too busy this summer/fall with work & family issues. Another reason I like being 3-4 years ahead on wood supply, when life gets crazy its great to have that reserve. I like to cut 2-3 days monthly year round in spare time, but that hasn't been happening much lately.
I know this guy from following his youtube channel for a while now. He is in northcentral Minnesota and splits all his wood with a maul. He burns himself but also has a firewood and a tree cutting business. He doesn't have a bucket truck but climbs the tree and cuts it in pieces when he can't just drop the whole tree. He is a great guy named Tim Gruchow. You would enjoy following him on his channel, definitely a throwback to a bygone generation of doing things simplistically using his head and hands and simple tools as much as possible.
He pulled away from that channel and started another solely focusing on wood carving. I asked him and he simply said "new beginnings, bless you"
It seems weird someone would have accumulated a lot of videos on a channel and then just delete the channel. Maybe he got mad at negative commenters. A shame, would like to see what he had up there!
This is an older post of mine, almost 3 years ago now that was resurected. For those that didn't see Tim Gruchow's YouTube videos, he ran a tree cutting and firewood business and had a YouTube channel that showed him cutting trees, splitting, stacking and selling firewood. As others have said, he split all his wood by hand which is pretty amazing when your processing and selling dozens and dozens of cords each year. It appears his YouTube videos are no longer available unfortunately...it was fascinating to watch him split a couple ricks or a cord at a time (by hand) with very little effort.
I wish we could see it, weird that it's totally gone! What kind of wood did he split, was it good hardwood or easy-splitting something?
He split everything.... I'm sure he avoided the ridiculous stuff we run across when we hand split firewood. If you have ever split a lot of wood by hand you could see how precise and efficient he is with a maul. Not to say we don't have a bunch of guys here on FHC that can do the same.... He just had videos of it... And split a ton of wood each year.
