I used the dirty hands 22 ton on Friday and was amazed at how efficient and awesome it worked. Had no problem cutting through any of the ash rounds I had. Wedge worked very fast and I am able to stop it before fully retracting in order to split the next piece of wood. Good price for the 22 ton and works awesome.

Does that 22 ton have a log catcher available for it ?

Actually yes I looked up today you can buy a log catcher and a 4 way wedge which would be the first thing I buy when I buy it.

I'm leaning toward the 28t DHT model from Costco...I was tempted to spring for one of those fancy kinetic models, but can't justify $3k for splitting maybe 5 cords a year. Plus, the solid-gold Costco return policy is factor indeed!

I don't think you'd be disappointed. And yep, the only drawback to the kinetic is cost. Don't see them in the used market yet either.

I think you will really like it.

I just remembered Lowes had a sale on the 35T at the same price as the 28. So, of course I upsized. The 28 will be be best of all worlds.

I started my firewood biz many moon ago with a Brave 20 ton. It got the job done and not much stopped it.
I don't think larger units or a 4 way we're even available at that time .
If I had to do it all over again now I would go with a bigger unit and 4 way for the little extra $.
For the average homeowner with time on his hands or $ constraints go with the 22 ton.
    If you got'em ($) ,, smok'em !

I'm on my fourth season with my predator 20 ton, I still love it.
The predator engine is a Honda clone so it is quite and strong.
If it ever breaks I can order parts from any Honda small engine dealer.
The two way splitting is fast, especially once you learn not to run full strokes.
It really takes two people to keep it going nonstop, one to stack splits and rounds, and one splitting nonstop.
The only wood it couldn't handle was some of that super tough maple I scored this year, otherwise it plows right through crotches and knots.
I use a ramp to roll the big stuff up to the splitter deck 20171017_172150.jpg

I've had my Timberwolf TW-P1 for about 8 years or so. Have split approximately 100 cords of wood with it, so not really all that much. Had to replace the pump this past month, leaking badly, to the tune of $400. Paid $2500 originally, including a table grate and 4-way wedge. It will split anything I have managed to put on the beam, and I can only recall ten or a dozen times or so that I have had to stop the cycle and restart due to a particularly gnarly piece (usually knotty pine).

If I could find a buyer for it, I would sell it in a heartbeat and buy one of the Super-Split kinetic machines. Expensive but they save a lot of time. I tend to pre-split large rounds with a sledge and wedges, or noodle into quarters, so it would be easy to keep one of these going with the smaller pieces. Plus the kinetic ones are much faster at processing smaller splits unless you have a very large machine with a 6-way, 8-way or larger wedge.

Kinetic machines are faster, but unless you are running a crew of three, you will end up buried in splits.
I used one back in college, and it took three of us physically fit college guys to feed rounds to the operator and carry away the splits.

I got the 25ton County Line form TSC last Memorial Day weekend. Split ~6 cords with it so far - it’s split all I threw at it.

Sure as heck beets doin it by hand!

Alrighty gents...I found the 25t right around what I wanted to pay, and in stock, assembled, and with fluids at the local Lowe's. Walked out with her for right at $950 after tax. Even better, a buddy of mine who's putting in a stove wanted to go in halves, so for under $500 I ended up with a very capable machine that should serve me for a few years. Stoked!
