Things Kids of Today Wouldn't Recognize

We had Sears (not Sears and Roebucks) and Eatons catalogues when I was a kid. My girlfriends and I would go through and make lists of all things we liked for our imaginary house we were furnishing. Our imaginary clothes closets were full of wonderful things. It was fun to see what the grand total was at the end.

No matter what this is so true.

They do have their own alphabet though that we didn't have as kids and looks like we survived.

He!!, I remember the Doctor coming to the house.

 

I remember milk being delivered in glass bottles. The dry cleaner guy went by on Thursdays and if you needed anything dry cleaned you put his cardboard sign in the window and he would stop. He always was whistling and he could whistle many tunes!

 

I also remember the milkman coming to the house , we also had potato chip guy that would come and drop off tin cans full of chips and pretzels and pick up the empties, Charles Chips.

When we had our milk delivered it had the paper cap and the 1st inch was cream. Loved strawberries and cream.
Love Charlie chips. We used to get them up at the lake in the summer. Actually you can still order them

 

I don't recall cream on top but was probably pretty young to remember ; But do the paper cap and then the paper disc with a little fold up pull tab inside the bottle neck that was the actual seal.

My mother was a Charles Chips junkie. If I can order I will have to keep that in mind for her when her birthday comes up next month. She would get a kick out of that

It does , looks like they might even sell them in a few stores that are sort of local to me. Have to look into this.

Finding milk in a glass bottle might not be quite as easy though.

 

Used to live half a block away from this stand in the late 50's early 60's. Can remember bringing their root beer home in 1 gallon brown glass jugs. Back then they had window side tray service right at your vehicle. The thought of their Coney Island dogs and frozen glass mugs of their famous root beer still linger vividly in my mind some 60 years later. That stand is still there and opened in the early 50's. If you are ever in Rockaway N.J. on Rt. 46 stop in.

 

Reminds me of the old A&W Root Beer we had here in New England.

They used to bring it to your car in a frozen mug and hang the tray on the window of the car. That was an old Ford station wagon with the fake wood paneling on the sides.

Makes me think of when I took my sisters roller skates and bolted them to a piece of wood for front wheels on a coaster go kart.

This is like a trip down memory lane.

 

Absolutely and the only person I can recall coming thru the front door. Coming thru the front door is probably why I remember because nobody but nobody ever used the front door. We had 2 back doors !

 

This particular stand they were on foot. They hook the tray on your car window and they carried those mechanical change banks on their belts.

 

There is a small Diner not far from here that still has these at the booth and they still work.
