    A couple things I got great joy from as a child was some bricks (wooden). They finally went to making them out of plastic but were never as good and for sure not as strong. Us kids got several gifts of them so we had quite a collection and build some big stuff. The other was an erector set.

    But then, tinker toys used to be a great thing too.
