So, as I was perusing the red oak honey hole, I spied some non-oak. There was some pine mixed in, and then I saw it - Black birch!

So, I began clearing and working my way through the jumble of tree top branches to get at the birch logs. Cut some to my 16" length and left some others longer.

I piled them separate from the oak I've been scrounging. I expect to be splitting the thicker pieces and cutting the smaller limbs to length in a couple of weeks.

Before cutting the limbs to length, I'll run the saw along the length of them, on opposite sides, to open up the bark and let the wood dry out.

That's great! Take a close-up of the bark, please, I've never seen black birch.

If you scratch the bark with a fingernail, it smells like spearmint. Strong spearmint.

Love sawing it up. The scent fills the air, and stays with the piled wood.

I hear it rots fairly quickly. That's why I'll be CSS'ing it in the near term.

yeso it does not as fast as white but still fast.. birch bark is water tight so zipping sides should let it dry

I've never seen black birch either. Yellow/Gold and Grey/white, but not black.
It does look a lot like black cherry, understandable why some call it cherry birch.
The smell of wintergreen is nice.

Dang! #3 of 4 is a dandy! Long straight red oak is a thing of beauty.

When I was processing my BL score this spring there was a tree that I wasn't sure if it was black birch or cherry, so I zipped it and cut it up. Still no idea what it is, but it's in the stacks!

Hey MikeInMa, that black birch picture of yours came in handy... IMG_20171011_26329.jpg IMG_20171011_1666.jpg
Then I turned the corner and found what I think is Chestnut of some kind, just branches though. 2nd dump score today, I should go back for 3rds before closing.

I had my afternoon appointments cancel on me today, so since I was in Nashua, I took a ride by the dump to scope things out. I wasnt dressed to be climbing piles, or picking through them. But I definitely didnt see anything like that! Just some huge logs over to the left side

Tough luck I got there first! If the pile looked neat, the loader had buried anything good.

Nice - Does it pass the smell test? Spearmint/wintergreen?

No, it just smelled like green wood to me. Not like a stick of gum or anything. IMG_20171011_18911.jpg
Anyway, I got it all split in half. The mulberry and the weird Chestnut stuff will wait a few days.
