Depending on how much you have, you should just stack up the logs and have a 1-day gtg, and we can help get stuff cut, split, and stacked. If it's a tight neighborhood, even better.
A mini GTG for the day would be good here. Just one saw has to get started, one tree gets felled and eat the rest of the day. Then we are legit. I'll see what I get done around here in the next month and go from there. I think having a bunch of hoarders here in the fall would be great.
Yesterday afternoon my son and I went to a neighbor across from my brothers house. A large locust limb fell onto her lawn. We cut and loaded that up and took it home. My son picked up the smaller sticks as I cut. It wasn't a huge haul, but it was more about helping a neighbor. I went to the pine rounds and finished off the tank of gas. This area is looking better with the rounds moved. 4 carts were hauled to the pIle to be split tomorrow. That should fill 4 racks. I want to put up more though. Turns out my brother is moving, so all the wood I gave him last fall I should be getting back.
You're getting it done Jon, it's not easy to move and get a wood pile going in the same year. Nice pics and thanks for the updates. If you need a hand with anything give me a shout.
My son joined me this afternoon at the splitter. He ran the control as I used hand signals. I went over safety as far as keeping hands away from the business end of things. Here is 20 minutes in. I could not keep up stacking and feeding the splitter. We had to cut things short as we disturbed some underground bees nest. We let things settle down for a bit. I had built the fourth rack earlier and filled it in no time. If I had another 20 minutes, I would have split the last rounds and topped all the racks off. My brother and his family stopped by and we plan on getting his pile over here tomorrow. I need more racks, but I need to figure where they are going to go. What a good problem to have. So these stacks are a mix of red pine, hemlock, sugar maple, apple and locust. I have white pine rounds out back that need splitting.
Just a quick update. The stove did not get installed last fall. The winter was mild enough that it could have been done on decent days. My insurance company has a requirement that a licensed contractor must install. The oil man stopped by every month... The stacks have grown and the pile to be split really grew. The mud is firm enough to get the splitter out, but rain may put that off for a few days. I cleaned up a bunch of saplings on the lane leading to the back of the property. Saplings down... After... I can get the tractor out back to the current processing project. The left side of this lane is a bunch of sugar maples I still have to cut the 6 foot limb on the walnut center left. I dropped a 40 foot dead standing red pine across the path to the back. Lots of wood here. A little past its prime, but it will go to the stacks. The top was full of bittersweet. The red pine behind it fell last year and those rounds got cut up. The limb wood is great kindling. A few of the smaller rounds ready for splitting. I should hopefully get my open burn permit soon to clean up the piles of brush. I'll leave some for the rabbits.
The wasteland is all cut down and the what looked to be blackberries were taken out. I have room for maybe 4-5 more rows here. I took out the splitter and it fired right up. About half the pile of maple, oak, birch and cherry got split. I vertical split a few of the red pine rounds that we hauled from out back. A bunch of black spruce was done too. Some of that was gnarly. Tomorrow is supposed to rain, I might get some of this put up on the racks and fill them. The hardwoods will go towards the back. This pile took about an hour. There are a few logs to cut to length under here. Once stacked, I'll get those done.
