Good pick today. 100 lb Vanderman No. 1 steam fitters vise. 21" long, 10" tall 5" wide jaws. Solid bar. This design has the screw exposed, but it is in good shape. This was the smallest in this series. The No. 3 was 160+ lbs. These were used in railroad shops, steam ships and pipe fitters shops. Circa 1891, may need to research the date though.

I'm going to tag a few of you guys: Scotty Overkill, blacksmith and fuelrod to see if anyone has seen one.

Holy Sh*t!!! Those Kurt Anglock vises retail for $500+! I don't even have a mill (yet), but if they're throwing out another one, LMK.

Man if that vise could talk!
There's a vise thread over on The VISES of Garage Journal - The Garage Journal Board but it's about 1000 pages long.
That is a cool old vise and I wonder what those 2 round (like pipe:D) castings are used for on the back side of the vise? No help from me on any Vanderman info.
Nothing especially cool about this one other than it's huge. 16" to the top of the 8" wide jaws. Iirc the vise junkies over at GJ said it was close to 300#.

I bought an 8" Wilton Tradesman vise at work and they cried bloody murder about the price. Thing is a beast and seems to be multiplying as a few more have magically appeared in other areas of the facilities. Usually replacing inferior import vises that have bent handles, sloppy/worn jaws and distorted bases or even screw shafts!

I will check those threads out. I found some info stamped into it. BOSTON MECH PIPE SHOP

The round channels on the back are for bending pipe. It would have had bushings to insert for smaller diameter pipe.

Just chalk from a snap line. I use it to look for shallow manufacturers stamps in old tools.
