Picked up another box tonight, 19 ratchets and probably 20 pounds of wrenches.

The box had been sitting on the floor behind the counter of a pawn shop for several weeks. I think they were afraid to put it out for fear it would get picked through. Got them to come down over 35% on the asking price. May be time to sell some tools, I counted over 90 ratchets tonight.

Finally dragged in the box I bought Thursday, turns out there were 20 ratchets, over 100 wrenches, 2 adjustable wrenches, a couple of pairs of ChannelLocks and over 60 sockets.

Today's haul from Dad - a pair of old wooden screw clamps that he didnt think were working. It took me a minute to figure them out too - one jaw is not threaded. They're no Besseys but I think they'll come in handy. I think the jaws are made of beech. Also an old Stanley level made from a beautiful piece of cherry, and a couple of throat plates that fit my craftsman tablesaw, including a dado insert that I think was custom made. A few old style vented gas cans as well.

I knocked the rust off with a wire wheel on my grinder. The guys on a tool site confirmed it is a tenderizer.

A few older ones to add to the collection.

The top is a 15 1/2" screw driver. I'm trying to pull a name off it but it is pretty pitted.

Second one down is a 10 1/2" Pexto.

Third down is a real nice shipbuilding caulking iron from Portland, ME. This would have been in a set. I did see a caulkers mallet at an antique market last year missing the handle. They were asking too much scratch for just the head.

Last one a Wm. Johnson caliper.

This set of moulding planes is from my dad, that he collected years ago. Most stamped with manufacturer and I assume the owners name. Circa 1840 ish.

Years ago I wanted a certain Ulmia workbench (largest one with full length tilting lockable storage drawer underneath). That model was discontinued in late 90's just before the company went bankrupt in 2002 & was reopened a couple years later. But there's not enough space here for such an item even if I got rid of that massive but very flat/stable Doug Fir bench I built in Jan 1987.

And the large Sjobergs Swedish benches sold in past 15 years are of equal quality, but alas I still have that little problem with space....

But feast your eyes on this little jewel - Not cheap, but their design/build quality is worth every penny.

Before the summer is gone,I'll have one of these. http://www.amazon.com/Sjobergs-SJO-33309-Workstation-Workbench-Accessories/dp/B017Y451LC

Just 24 pounds, its basically a micro-version of a top shelf Sjobergs bench that's completely portable. Should complement my 70's vintage Zyliss vise quite nicely for certain smaller or odd shaped projects. :D

From same city as the venerable Sargent Tool Company.Sargent at its peak matched Stanley in production & number of items in their line but didn't have near the nationwide distribution network (nor capital for acquiring other smaller tool companies like Stanley).

Their hand tool line was dropped in the late 60's but continue today with a high dollar line of builder's hardware, lock sets etc for commercial construction. I have an old Sargent residential mortice lock, kinda battered its gotta be a century old by now.

Not much on New Haven. I'm fascinated by these tool companies. So much production history is lost. Here is a little info. That drawknife may be pre 1912.

    OldTools Archive

Thistle, interesting on the mortice locks. I have them throughout my house. The steel hinges are stamped with " sw " with a heart around them. Stanley Works maybe? I have to look it up now...
