Getting close to having it all cleaned up, the old lady is sweeping up the smaller bits now and then it will be time to shovel the last of it, vacuum and sweep up the crumbs.

Knob and tube may be cool in other people's houses. I don't want any in mine.

Quick photoshop of what I am thinking with the arch. Ignore the 2x4s.

I would go wider but the rooms are offset and it would make things look weird from the dining room.

I was worried when you said "arch" - I'm taking mine out since they make the hall and kitchen entrance look small. But you have it going nice and high (mine are low) and widening the doorway, so that will look good.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten how the heat moved a lot more easily after removing the arch for the hallway - major difference.

Went from this (really old pic from before I moved in 2 years ago)

To this - early fall - since have taken it all the way up to the cross beam)

Huge difference in both heat transfer from the living room as well as making the hallway entrance look wider (it isn't - well, except for that 2" strip on the right side).

    I'm just thinking here...

You may have a better try at keeping the heat in the house if you had an exterior wall there. I understand the beauty of having a room with a view, but the entire wall missing?

You people up there in New Hampshire sure are crazy....

What can I say - nature lover here.

It was weird, when I was looking at houses a couple of years ago, another house had this exact same view, and they weren't even on the same side of town. I still struggle to understand how that happens :D

Now that ya'll have 'spained it to me, I took care of the issue.

Seriously though, paint is drying as I type this. I removed the wallpaper a month or so ago, last night finished sanding down the mudding that I did last week, and now it just needs another coat or two.

Hey, didn't mean to hijack the thread Grizzly!

Less chance of flooding between the living room and dining room too.

Gotta have a dining room. Actually, maybe that was why my basement was so wet - the stairs are behind there :D

Shop around, try to get your budget lined up. My renovation ended up costing 3 times what we had planned, and that was twice as much as we paid for the house when we first had it built.
