Thanks for the bump, I didn't know we had a thread like this going! Sure beats that other place where the mention of a gun puts everything on lockdown! Anyway, I've been doing some research about reloading, at first just for .38 sp/.357, and eventually I'll do .44 sp/mag and 9mm. Will this kit get me everything I need for .38sp/.357 to start besides the brass, primers, bullets, and powder? Is there anything else I should get, like a scale or something? https://kempfgunshop.com//index.php...facturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=41 And what's the situation on powder? I was looking around online and it seems like handgun powder is sold out everywhere. It surprises me, since I can go find just about any ammo on the shelves (besides rimfire) that I want. Is that the norm lately with powder, or am I just looking in the wrong places? Are local gun shops better stocked? I'm not looking to find a killer price on powder, I would just like to find a pound or so to get me started learning the basics. I can figure out how to save money and hoard later!
One of the old time reloading supply guys here had it. He had about 700 #s on back order a few months back. Old coworker called and then called me cause he knew I wanted it. All I wanted was one. Trying to s reach my funds and I dont shoot that much really. I had a booboo and trashed several hundred grains of titegroup and a half a pound of h414. So I wasted some. He had 12-30 pounds left or so.
You need a scale of some sort to either weigh all charges or to check your powder measure. I havent checked the link yet. Pistol is pretty easy. 9mm have to watch it as its so small. I load all those you list. Depending upon your shop local is better if they price fair. Some charge 2x what they should. Hazmat fee is like $45 for 1 pound of powder or 20#s and same for primers 1k or 20k you pay the fee. Cabelas has good prices on primers and its the best price if you have one. Academy sells limited primers at a fair price but no powder. Shoot me a pm if u like I will give you my cell and I can answer any questions I can by text or just jere in this thread or by PM here. I m no expert really but know enough. I am like boceefus and only have a few years exp though. Some of my buddies I learned tricks from probably have over 100 years reloading exp combined
I had no idea the hazmat fee was so high! I have a Bass Pro and Field and Stream locally here, as well as several small and mid sized gun shops. Maybe I'll spend an afternoon checking them out and seeing what they have as far as powder. There's a particular revolver I'm looking for anyway, so it's not like I'd be wasting my time driving around to gun shops....
Bass pro may be your best bet. Not one near me so I dont know if they have reloading stuff. Oh and I buy hard cast lead bullets off the net way cheaper than local or even cabelas. Most local shops dont carry reloading stuff I have found and if they do its a random selection thats not good usually.
try missouri bullet they offer different hardness bullets for low to higher velocity and have usps flat rate shipping they are also a family business and are very nice and fast delivery
I bought from missouri before. Lucky13 beats their prices for smaller quantities really up to a few thousand. They dont offer different harnesses but offer different sizes. And offer polymer coated bullets. Both have discounts that you can find for like 5% off. Lucky 13 is a small business and I think a few guys own it. Its in NC.
Bassjam, that kit isn't quite all you need. It's a great press...I have the same one. You still need a good digital scale, micrometers, brass tumbler (soap and water work but huge pia), media for tumbler. As far as pistol powder, yes it's hard to find. Since ur close to bass pro, u can ship to store and pick it up with no shipping or hazmat mat fees. When you see powder u want, buy all u can afford. It lasts forever if stored right. Primers are also a hazmat so ship to store there also. Warning...It's a sickness...I'm hoarding reloading stuff just like firewood haha! Feel free to pm me also. Glad to talk reloading
I should of said lucky13 has free shipping. The price you see is the shipped price. Example 500, .380 bullets its $30. Thats shipped to door price. 500, .38/.357 bullets is $38 thats if you order 1 quantity or 5 of them (shipping that is. Price is per unit of 500). The cast out of old range lead and wheel weights maybe. Think a hardness of 17???? But the coated bullets dont matter if pure lead as they won't "melt" or lead.
Update:as of this second bass pro has huge shipment of powder available! Lots of stuff I haven't seen in awhile! Free ship to store avoids hazmat fees too
Well thats great. Its a 2-3 hour trip to the closest one for me. But I guess I just got 2#s of pistol powder so I'm good for 2k rounds or so.
My wife's uncle just took me out to show me a toy gun he invented. This man is so talented he can do anything. For this toy he necked a .243 down to a .22?!? Went to the range and he said today was perfect with temperature and humidity at sun up. He said stand off to the side and watch the bullet fly. I thought what? He shot and the blind man saw. Neat as heck! The condition of the air was right and the bulet left a freaking vapor trail!!! I wonder how fast it is moving, I have never witnessed a bullet leave a white trail just like a jet. He said it is going fast enough that it boils the moisture in the air from the friction of the bullet and air.
I believe lucky 13 has not been around long. My step dad and I have ordered thousands of rounds from them. Were happy. If its not listed on the sire call them. They only list what's in stock. But they will make anything for you and you have it in a few weeks. They custom size etc. There fast. There in NC so I get stuff in like 2 days. If it says out of stock I dont think I have waited more than a week n a half. Weights are as close to spec as any company I used and so is diameters. Tip. Google around you can find a 5% discount code for them. Gun clubs or something get it and its all over. I will give it to you by pm if u like. I just have to dig it out of my notes.
Finally picked my powder up from my buddy who got it for me a few weeks ago . Said the guy had shelves of it up. And more in his store room. Its a guy that has a store in his garage. Been doing it years and started it so that his buddies and him could get access to reloading stuff in this rural area. Been in it like 30 years. This was more expensive than the last unique I bought like 2 years ago. But at least I could buy it!!! My buddy had an 8lb keg of BE!!!
Nope. I guess its more of a shop behind house. Like 4 car size. The retail space is about a 1.5 car garage size.
