The Real Truth seems as fuzzy as ever after reading this thread. Is porting simply the next step after you get to the 50/70/90 saw mix you are happy with? Or should one just start with two ported 562s with two different bars and call it done?
Sounds like a perfect plan for anyone that heats their home exclusively with delivered 48" diameter logs
Porting can be an answer for many things. Done well, it can make your favorite saw your soulmate. It can, on some models, make an underpowered turd into a great saw. What it will not do is make you fall in love with a saw you hate, or make a 60cc work right along side of a 90cc. 50/70/90 works and works well. Porting those saws will make it work a little faster/louder is all.
I don't think anyone would not want to improve the performance of any vehicle, tool, weapon, you name it...some of us more than others of course but the $$$ put into it is always a factor of anything. Best advice I can think of if you're interested but hestitant on this stuff is try the same saw stock vs. ported by a good builder with the same chain and bar. Then decide. Keep in mind some models of saws respond better to your average woods port. I jumped right in to ported chainsaws after a muffler mod and timing advance on a model I really liked to begin with. But of course YMMV (your mileage may vary) and I like almost any chainsaw ported or not.
Porting is the answer to a problem that doesn't exist. lol. people have and will still continue to cut with unported saws until the end of time, and do it everyday. Very few people in a day to day tree profession run ported saws when you look at the whole. Sure there are some guys here or on AS, but to most people that run a saw for a living, an added 300-400 dollar expense means less cash in their pocket at the end of the day. I know the arguments about more wood on the ground more cash in the pocket, but most people out there . That is most of the ways to another saw for them. I'm not saying I don't run ported saws, I also do my own work because I couldn't have the arsenal I do if I had to pay someone to do it. I'm not bad mouthing anyone that ports saws either. Like I said, I run ported saws and will likely never run a stock saw again (other than my 550xp).
